Comparing Girl By Jamaica Kincaid And Buxton Spice

During the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, women were expected to live domestic lives while their male counterparts lived public lives. This meant that women were stuck at home doing chores around the home and raising the children while the man of the household went out and worked to make money for the family (Sailus, "Feminism in the 19th Century: Women's Rights, Roles, and Limits”). In the short story “girl” written by Jamaica Kincaid, a girl is being told what her life is going to consist of and how she will have to complete certain tasks around the house to care for her family. Texts can be changed drastically by the amount of historical and cultural background the reader has on the topic addressed in the text. I read this …show more content…
In the passage written by Carol Baily, the short story is analyzed and critiqued for its theme or central message. This source was a book review on two short stories, including the short story “Girl” written by Jamaica Kincaid and the novel Buxton Spice written by Oonya Kempadoo. These two stories were written about the gender specific roles of women during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. The two reviews state how these two stories similarly emphasized some of the issues that plagued the world during this setting. The analysis brought up some interesting points that I had not considered. The review states that because this story is written in a list that gives advice to a little girl on how to better perform certain tasks that it emphasized the problems that occurred during this time period relating to gender performance (Baily 107). When I first read this story I did not consider this point and I just saw a list. I thought that maybe this was signifying that there were certain standards that women were held to by superior people in their life. I thought that this short story was written to emphasize the fact that these standards were held to high for women due to the length of the list. Due to the fact that the list only included everyday household tasks that woman were expected to perform I also thought that this list emphasized the fact that women weren’t …show more content…
I read consulted another source that was a study conducted on women during the 20th century. The study was to test the idea that traditional women view men as superior and liberated women do not. The study found that the traditional women did find the man more superior, while the liberated woman found the woman more intimidating than the man. Based on this study, the idea that in general women coming from a traditional environment often view men as superior to them (Clark 81). This adds another element to the short story “Girl” written by Jamaica Kincaid. As I mentioned earlier when I initially read the text I thought that this list was recited to the girl by her mother or a motherly figure in the girl’s life. I thought this because of the fact that most of the advice given to the young girl was about daily household chores that were usually performed by a women in the setting of this short story. I thought that this information was being passed down to ensure that the young girl would know how to do daily household chores to ensure that she would be able to provide for her family just as this motherly figure has done for the little girl. After reading the study, I changed my mind about who I thought that the deliverer of the list was. Instead of imagining a women I imagined a man because of the fact that the study informed me that traditional women view a man to be superior to a woman. In

“Girl” written by Jamaica Kincaid is an unconventional text that portrays a mother’s list of rules that her daughter must obey in order to be accepted in society. When I first read this narrative I read it as a resistant reader, having little to no knowledge about what culture, time period or what the real meaning of this list was. I did know however that it has some link to womanhood and how a woman must portray herself to the outside world. When I first read “girl” I initially interpreted it as an outline of what a women in this society and how easy it is to be portrayed as a “slut”. This coming from my own cultural views (middle class Australian) where if a girl wore a particular type of clothing, said the wrong thing, or even seen with…

In the short story, “Girl” written by Jamaica Kincaid, the delivery of the story reflects a mother, with her own past experiences and control of being a female in her time and tradition, gives guidance to her daughter in an altered world, to berate her daughter’s current ways and modern day outlook on society and its culture. The author creates a “how to” structure for the way females are supposed to act, dress, and their expected jobs and responsibilities; or at the least the way she feels daughter in the short story should take in such manners. All through the story, tradition is stressed, for example the mother describing to her daughter how to prepare Caribbean food, in the old fashioned way like she was taught. The tone while reading…

In conclusion, its important to emphasize that the role of women is much different today than it was in the past. Therefore, by looking at modern female influences, its easy to perceive that they hold more power today than they did in the past, where women can now compete in the workplace for jobs that were once traditionally held by men. As you have seen, the 1900s have been full of bigotry towards women as proven in these two stories. A time in generation in which matrons were patronized by patriarchs.…

There are gender stereotypes everywhere you go. However, I never thought that it would happen in a kid’s summer camp. First instance, I tried to help a group of men carrying heavy boxes to the cafeteria’s storage room and one of the man who saw me carrying a box told me that I did not need to help and that I should go to supervise the kids. I believe that man has been influenced by the innate society idea of gender stereotyping and as such, men do the hard jobs for example carrying the heavy boxes. This man has learned that boys are tough and girls are weak either at his home while he was growing up or at school when elementary students are told about the girls and boy traditional roles.…

At first glance, this short story may not appear to be a short story at all, barely one page in length, “Girl” does not use the traditional format seen in most short stories as it is one long sentence within one large paragraph. The use of this format causes the reader to feel overwhelmed with information. It also creates a feeling of urgency while reading, which in turn causes the reader to read through the story quickly, perhaps missing some information and needing to re-read the short story a second or even third time. In her article, The Rhythm of Reality in the Works of Jamaica Kincaid, scholar Diane Simmons describes Kincaid’s style of writing as “manipulative” in how it how it draws in the reader (467). This style of writing and the feeling the structure of the story gives to the reader is symbolic of the pressures felt by young women as they are told over and over again how to behave within and navigate through…

Gender Inequality Over the years, we have observed a slow change being made towards to the portrayal of respect being equally distributed towards both gender. As time changes, the views of the society has gradually changed on how women are being portrayed in the world we live today. As Tuchman stated, “For our society, like any other society must pass on its social heritage from one generation to the next” (41). One can agree with this statement, it is to be known that any cultural value, it is to be passed on from one generation to the next, however implementing that women from the past were to stay home, look after their families, providing respect for the man of their household, and so on.…
