First we will start with the similarities of both men and their letters. The two parties were both fighting for the rights of certain groups. King was protesting the civil rights movement; Gandhi was protesting the high salt tax on his people. Obviously both men were not writing about the salt tax in India because the were in very different parts of the world. King wrote his letter about the segregation problem in the United States. Gandhi’s letter was about the high salt tax that the British enforced upon them. Another difference was the length of each letter. The length of Gandhi’s letter had to do with his personality. He is a straight-forward person who is direct in his getting his point across, and displays this trait in this letter. Dr. King on the other hand was a pastor, who is naturally wrong winded, so it carried over into his writing. According to King, it was not like he had anything better to do with his time, as he was sitting in jail. Last but not least, was the timing of each letter. Yes, the times the letter writing were very much different, but I'm focusing on their own timing. For example, King wrote his letter after he protested in Birmingham, Alabama, and was arrested.
