What is the true meaning of destiny? It’s an inexplicable power that shows our lives and fates as simple yet intricate prewritten little stories bound together by an uncontrollable force. However, the true meaning of destiny cannot be explained by such few undemanding words for destiny itself can never be truly understood. With a destiny of their own to seek and unfold, Antonio from the novel Bless Me, Ultima and Paikea from the novel Whale Rider, realized the importance of acceptance, perseverance, and above all fate. Antonio, after astonishingly dreaming of his birth, felt pressured into becoming either his father’s last hope or his mother’s biggest dream. On the other hand, Paikea struggled to prove her self

For example, Antonio was just a young boy who had trouble in deciding his profession- a problem many people experience even in later years- due to the differing expectations of his parents. He also found it difficult to fit in at school and struggled to make good friends which is also another relatable hardship for many. However, he was put through many supernatural experiences that in turn created a magical atmosphere for his story. In one specific occurrence, Tony’s Uncle Lucas had seen the Trimentina Sister performing a ‘Black Mass’ in which they were using their witchcraft to summon Satan and bravely leapt into danger's way to rebuke them for their dirty ways. He was then cursed by the witches- the daughters of a man who was “crazy enough to assault [a] priest” (Anaya 141)- and suddenly fell into a death-like sickness that even their best doctors and most revered priest had failed to cure. Determined to help his Uncle, Tony and Ultima set off to fend off evil that resided in Lucas’ withering body. As they cared for Lucas in a secluded room with Ultima’s herbs and magic, Tony somehow felt the agonizing torment that had plagued his Uncle for so long. Unable to understand the strange pain that was magically inflicted upon him, Tony lay still as he “dissolved into [Uncle Lucas], and [they] shared a common struggle against the evil within” (Anaya 100). It was as unrealistic situation and yet it was somewhat believable because Tony’s whole life had been sprinkled with such mysterious occurrences since the day he had dreamed of his own birth. This situation in particular led him to understand the importance of sacrifice and selflessness as he unknowingly suffered to save his Uncle. In Pai’s case, however, the ratio of magical to realistic is quite low. As

Death is one of the most evocative concepts known to man, when endured it 's arduous to reconcile the aftermath. But aside from making the hairs on the back of necks stand, death is also agonizing. The death of a loved one or anyone can break a man, and if they are not mentally prepared they could lose themselves or in many cases lose the will to continue to believe in their spiritual or secular ideology. Regardless of what it is death can always find a creep into your beliefs and make you question the fundamental pieces of your life that make you whole. In “Bless me Ultima” by Rudolfo Anaya, aside from playing a vital part in the development of the plot, the deaths that take place in this piece of literature are critical to the mindset of Antonio, the protagonist, and his beliefs.…

Two-Man Luge, without a question, is a fairy tale! Claire Battershill’s “Two-Man Luge” displays strong evidence towards the famously known fairy tale, Cinderella. Two-Man Luge possesses a similar structure and several factors that give readers’ thoughts just as fairy tales would, like the famous “happily ever after”. Throughout the centuries Fairy Tales have provided a specific design for authors to follow and for audiences to react. “Two-Man Luge” is an unintentional Fairy Tale that does just that.…

We as humans, believe that we are responsible for all the choices we make in life. Some might call it free will but many others might say our lives are determined completely by fate. Free will implies that we the people can do whatever we please and that we are free and uncontrolled. Fate is the idea that no matter what a person chooses to do, something in their lives is already inevitably about to happen. In A Prayer for Owen Meany, written by John Irving, the theme of fate is clearly evident.…

Another common trope in witch-wizard fantasy is, magic must always be present in some way. This means throughout the story there must be a magical source or somebody who has the power to produce magical powers. In my own novel “Hex Hall” there is magic found throughout the story since the main character is a witch, she casts spells whenever she pleases and her father is a warlock so she gets her magical side from him. In Harry Potter it is present considering they attend a school specifically for witchcraft and wizardry, every student who attends must be of the magical background. Another one in this sub-genre is having friends and allies.…

Commonly seen in literature, revenge has driven an abundance of stories such as Hamlet, The Count of Monte Cristo, and Wuthering Heights. Bronte shows us through the character, Heathcliff, that the ending self-injury of revenge may be worse than the original cause. For instance, Heathcliff never finds happiness through his revenge.…
