A symbol can be defined as a mark or character used as a conventional representation of an
object, function, or process. It is very important to understand every line of the texts for a better
interpretation. In Oedipus Rex, Sophocles made sure to use many symbols to show the hidden
truth about the relationship of Oedipus and his search of truth. The most important ideas portrayed by the play is the fate. The idea of fate is showed by
Tiresias, one of the characters. Tiresias symbolized fate, power, and knowledge. In the physical
sense, he possessed acquaintance, caution, and moderation. It is the truth sustains me”
(sophocles,19) tiresias said. He is aware of all the secrets about the destruction of the Thebes.
He finds out and knows the fate of everybody including Oedipus. His character also shows an
ironic relationship between blindness and knowledge just because he is blind and also a
prophet who see all the truth. The stress that Tiresias has in Oedipus Rex is very intense that
everybody is afraid, which bring in denial Oedipus and it is the reason why tiresias exemplify
