Comparing Evil In The Bible And Ancient Greek Myth

Improved Essays
In both the bible and Greek mythology, the first women to inhabit Earth are essentially viewed as the downfall of mankind due to their flawed characteristics of temptation and curiosity. While Eve was created to be the companion to Adam, Pandora was crafted to be Zeus' gift of destruction to mankind for Prometheus' constant disrespect towards the various Gods. As a result of the selfish acts made by both women, the overall tone of humanity had been severely altered due to the incorporation of newly discovered evils that have plagued all of existence. The source of evil told by both the bible and ancient Greek myths provided invaluable themes and lessons in order to demonstrate the true power of an individual's decision. Pandora and Eve had essentially become the most destructive women in history because they had fallen victim to their natural human instincts. The ignorance displayed by both women provided all of humanity with an everlasting balance between good and evil. …show more content…
The creation of both Pandora and Eve had significantly different reasons of existence due to the motives of Zeus and God. God had created Eve from the rib of Adam in order to eliminate loneliness for all of his gifts to humanity; Eve's creation was based on the belief that she would provide the companionship that Adam needed but instead she corrupted the Garden of Eden by going against the word of God. However due to Prometheus' acts of disobedience by providing man with fire and making bad parts attractive, Zeus had Hephaestus craft Pandora with various god-like traits such as charm and beauty as well as a thieving nature in order to punish the human race. Stories where women are hinted as evil go all the way back to Adam and Eve, where Eve tempts Adam into eating the apple releasing evil to the rest of the world. This is one of the original views where a woman is seen as the Devil. This is seen several more times throughout the Christian religion, where the woman is often seen as tempting the man, similar to the Devil.…

Therefore, Pandora serves as the balance to the good when she opened the jar that releases the misery and disease onto mankind. Pandora herself was made in the image of imperfect goddesses for the purpose of deceit and destruction, with “a bitch’s mind and a thief’s temper”, as an act of retaliation by Zeus against Prometheus (forethought), who had stolen heavenly fire for all mankind to admire. This creation to be a gift for Prometheus’ less cautious brother, Epimetheus (afterthought). Before Epimetheus accepted the booby-trapped gift, men “lived like Gods without sorrow of heart, remote and free from toil and grief” (Works and Days, 110-115). This contradicts the myth of Eden, where the ability to live “like God” is something advocated by Lucifer, resulting in the couple’s expulsion from paradise. Before being sent into the wilderness, Adam and Eve’s only equality to the existence of God was that they were made in his image.…

As stated previously, myths provide a way for the Greeks to give advice on how to lead a happy life. Hesiod explains how one can never escape marriage and must find a wife or die alone. This can be represented through Pandora, who while attractive and appealing, resembling something favorable as described by Hesiod “Intricately designed and a wonder to look at” (Theogony 584), is also hiding evil inside. Additionally, the attractiveness appearance and evil emotions of Pandora directly shows the binary opposites of inner and outer beauty.…
