Just as it appears the animals’ philosophy is idealistic, Napoleon, one of the leaders, expels Snowball, another leader, from the farm. As the corruption takes over the farm, winter approaches. Hardship and demise are themes associated with winter as elaborated, “The stormy weather was followed by sleet and snow, and then by a hard frost which did not break till well into February… They were always cold, and usually hungry as well” (Animal Farm 29). Orwell continuously matches the plot and mood with the season, with spring meaning new beginnings, summer showing maturity, fall having a test of…

When characters of different class interact in literature they often show the Authors thoughts on class system in their society. In Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck portrays a world isolated to a ranch and nearby town and this opens up a dialogue between characters of different standing on the class system and shows the futility of the working man’s dream by showing the evolution of two characters dream and the eventual demise of that dream. In contrast, George Orwell’s Animal Farm provides an insight into the way communism and man’s nature work in the presence of each other. It tells the story of a revolution on a farm which eventually ends in a totalitarian ruling of the farm from simply a different leader. Whilst both novels where published…

Violence and Corruption of Leaders “They had come to a time when no one dared speak his mind, when fierce, growling dogs roamed everywhere, and when you had to watch your comrades torn to pieces after confessing to shocking crimes” (Orwell 87) This is the scene for George Orwell’s Animal Farm, where pigs take over governmental rule after driving out the tyrannical Mr. Jones. Although the new government was designed from ideas of equality, corruption amongst the pigs leads to a reign of terror equal to or worse than that of Mr. Jones. Orwell’s intention in writing Animal Farm was to indirectly critique the ruling of the newly formed Soviet Union, therefore many characters in the novel are related to prominent leaders after the Russian…

Dystopian societies will often show signs of totalitarianism and dictatorship. George Orwell does a pretty good job at expressing the thought of a dictatorship and totalitarianism through his novels. 1984 and Animal Farm have pretty big influences from the historical events that were going on in Orwell’s time, such as the Nazis and the Soviet Union. Throughout his writing that theme comes up quite a bit. 1984 and Animal Farm demonstrates irony, tone, and foreshadowing, Orwell addresses them to express the hopelessness of the two dystopian novels.…

Conformity can leave someone blind to reality and seeing what other people can’t can lead to nonconformity. Although conformity can end in a negative outcome there are specific cases in which both conformity and nonconformity are positive and beneficial to society. In the novel Animal Farm, Boxer, a very work- focused horse, is a prime example of a conformist. All throughout the novel Boxer puts himself through so much suffering only so that the farm strives and becomes great, he does end up dying but is still left the farm with a positive effect. In retrospect Mahatma Gandhi was a nonconformist and an activist.…

In Animal Farm, the prevailing ideology that controls the farm is the philosophy of Animalism. The seeds of Animalism were planted in the minds of the pigs after Old Major’s rebellion-inciting speech at the beginning of the story. Napoleon and a few of the other pigs then crafted the philosophy of Animalism as it exists throughout most of the story. Eventually, the pigs simplify the philosophy into seven rules, called the Seven Commandments. The Seven Commandments include important truths such as “Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy”…

In Animal Farm chapter 7 the theme of people’s ignorance contributing to their political and social oppression is enunciated plenty of times throughout the novel. When one of the dogs leaped towards Boxer and he managed to pin the canine, Boxer “ Looked at Napoleon to know whether he should crush the dog or let it go”( Orwell 58). This denotes that even though Boxer can crush the dog, which represents the army, he is to ignorant to realize it and preferably asks Napoleon for directions. This also symbolizes that the middle class is strong enough to revolt against the upper class. After witnessing Boxer pinning the canine to the floor he reacts by “ suddenly appeared to change countenance, and sharply ordered Boxer to let the dog go”…
