The greatest hero of Greece, was Hercules. The Greeks are much different from the people of 2016, and they valued courage and strength the most, while forgiving him because of their respect for his good deeds. The Greeks valued courage because in their time a common way of living was “survival of the fittest”. When Hercules proved he was courageous and strong to the people by fighting off monsters, he was immediately respected. “Throughout his life Hercules had this perfect confidence that no matter who was against him he could never be defeated, and facts bore him out” (Hamilton 226).…

The tale of a hero is one of the most classic of stories, told in various forms throughout the ages. Every hero, classical and modern, has different strengths, weaknesses, and challenges that they demonstrate and face along the way, exhibiting traits that prove them a hero. While there is no doubt that the central figures of the Greek myths of Perseus, Hercules, and Atalanta are all heroes, Hercules, strong both in will and physically, stands as the best example of a classic hero. Heroes are not made without challenges, some of which they face early on in their journey. Hercules and Atalanta meet their first struggle as children, with the goddess Hera sending the former “two great snakes [that] came crawling into the nursery” (Hamilton 228), which Hercules promptly kills, and the latter being “left on a wild mountainside to die of cold and hunger” (Hamilton 246) by her father.…

Through portraying the ideal being, storytelling and mythology play an essential role in the influence of modern society. Contrary to the tales of perfection, a plethora of myths mention Hephaestus, the Greek god of metalworking and smithing (Cavendish 1268), as the only god on Olympus who is not a perfect figure (Graves 87). Although he faced pain and suffering during his life, he was essential to the prosperity of the other gods. As the craftsman of Olympus, Hephaestus forged golden handmaidens that could think and speak to assist in his work (Cavendish 1268). He built the palace of Olympus as well as weapons for the Gods, including: Zeus’s lightning bolts, Helios’ winged chariot, and Apollo and Artemis’s arrows (Guirand 140).…
