Comparing Detasseling Corn And Service Jobs Like Working At Goodwill

Improved Essays
There are differences in all types of jobs. In this essay, I want to talk about the differences between detasseling corn, to service jobs like working at Goodwill. These are two types of work that I have performed and will speak from experience.
Detasseling is the process of removing the tassel from the tops of corn plants and then throwing them on the ground (Webster’s Dictionary). Detasseling is used as a form of pollination control in order to cross-breed two varieties of corn (Webster’s Dictionary).
Farmers hire teenagers to work two to four weeks during the summer months. They can work from four to ten hours a day. The pay ranges from $9.25 an hour and will increase $1.00 each year of experience. During the second year, if the detasseler

The detasseler has to make sure he/she drinks plenty of water in order to stay hydrated. The detasseler has to wear certain types of clothing. For example, he/she must wear a netted hat, safety glasses, gloves, boots, and a long sleeved shirt to keep them protected from the blades of corn. The sharp blades of the corn plant will cut into the skin and rashes will form that itch really bad.
All types of service jobs deal with serving people and what they want from that company. At Goodwill, you work in the air conditioning and in the heat outside unloading trucks and cars. People bring things they don’t want anymore and donate them to be sold for low prices to help those in need. Items range from clothing to furniture, appliances, antiques, game systems, and sports equipment.
As items are brought in they have to be sorted and quality checks for the condition. Some items are brand new with price tags still attached so all that has to be done is put in the right place. This type job paid $8.00 an hour and is long term and eventually with benefits. Working at Goodwill or any service type job, you still have to wear a uniform or a special type of clothing.
There are differences in all types of jobs. The best part of working is the money. Despite the work and the requirements of the job you get a good feeling from being able to help

I would spend my one million dollars in three very distinct and controversial ways. I would portion the money out to be donated to three different causes. My number one cause is factory jobs going to other countries, which is going to receive six hundred thousand. Second, homelessness would be nonexistent due to people having more jobs and my donation of three hundred thousand. Lastly, the income gap between the rich and poor would be substantially lower and the middle class population would increase dramatically due to more job opportunities in the United States of America and the final donation of my million dollars of one thousand dollars.…

Throughout the ECR I will refer to the incarcerated Wes as The Other Wes and the author Wes as Wes Moore. The Other Wes was a product of his environment because of where he was raised and because of the people he looked up to. Wes Moor was different from The Other Wes because he grew up living off of people’s expectations of him. The purpose of the book is to show that life is what you make it, it’s up to you if you want to be successful or a drug dealer.…
