Comparing Death In Romeo And Juliet And A Tale Of Two Cities

In Romeo and Juliet, Romeo says,¨Thus with a kiss I die¨(Shakespeare 87). These were the last words he said before ending his life for Juliet. People are scared of death and do not like to talk about it. Death is shown throughout countless works of literature. Four examples of these works are: the tragic novella, Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck, the dramatic play, Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare, the historical fiction novel, A Tale of Two Cities, written by Charles Dickens, and the poem ¨The Truth¨ written by Frankie Paino. In literature, death is usually portrayed negatively but in the long run it might be for the better and may even teach a life lesson.
Death is shown multiple times throughout the novel Of Mice and Men. The first appearance of death is when Lennie holds mouse that he has accidentally killed because he is not gentle enough with it. Sydney Carton died for the sake of Lucie and Charles Darnay. His death was an act of love, courage, and friendship. He also helped comfort the seamstress before heading to the guillotine. If it was not for him the seamstress would have died scared and lonely. An example of Carton caring for the seamstress is shown by this quote: ¨The supposed Evrémonde descends, and the seamstress is lifted out next after him. He has not relinquished her patient hand in getting out, but still holds it as he promised. He gently places her with her back to the crashing engine that constantly whirrs up and falls, and she looks into his face and thanks him¨(Dickens 365). This quote shows how Sydney Carton comforts the seamstress before they are sent to the guillotine.
