Dead Poet Society, and Mona Lisa Smile both had a story that consisted of explicit events presented in the film; both Mr. Keating (Robin Williams), and Ms. Watson (Julia Roberts) were new teachers to a school with very unconventional teaching methods, that didn’t follow the textbooks but rather forced students to really step out of their comfort zones, and think for themselves. They used similar approaches to implement these teachings to students, yet both resulted in different lessons. Mr. Keating was more focused on teaching the boys to be your own person, have your own voice, stand up for your beliefs, many lessons that focused on finding yourself. Ms. Watson on the other hand had many lessons connecting …show more content…
Both these differences matter because as viewers we see how someone can take the exact same STORY, change the DIEGESIS and have a different PLOT. The DIRECTOR had different visions for where the story would go, Mona Lisa Smile had an ending where everyone had embraced the lessons learned, and had moved on towards a better future, where as in Dead Poet Society Neil had lost his life, as he was unable to stand up for himself, and use Mr. Keating’s lessons in his life. The difference of lessons mattered because it showed how different genders, around the same time period had different concerns, woman were more focused on advancement of society, where they were not restricted to the fate chosen for them, while boys were concerned with self growth. Watson, on the other hand in Dead Poet Society we really did not see much of Mr. Keating. The focus of Dead Poet Society was the boys, while Mr. Keating was just a background character that helped them grow as individuals; he sparked the light in them pushing them to develop independently. In Mona Lisa Smile Ms. Watson was more of a main character, not only did she help her students find themselves, she herself was on a pathway of realization. This was significant because everyone knows the struggle of personal growth, and being able to stand up for your beliefs, but not everyone could relate to feminism and the need for society to be more accepting of woman. Having Ms. Watson’s story shown really helped us understand where her morals, and perspective were coming from. She helped us apprehend why woman needed to push boundaries, and not conform to society’s standard’s of women only being good for being housewives. She was not married, and she was educated with a PHD, which back in the day for women was not normal. All her students questioned her lack of martial status, and she emphasized that you did not need a man in your life. She stated roles were not made to be filled, meaning we wrote our destiny, and we could do whatever pleased us, and to challenge what you were told. In Dead Poet Society though we lacked EXPLICIT information of Mr. Keating, this did not help us connect much to him, as we were lacking information to
