Comparing Dante's Inferno And Beowulf

Evil Concepts One of the major themes in Dante’s Inferno and Beowulf is evil when we look at today’s society we still see that evil still has a prevalent force in today’s world whether it be words or actions the evil that inhabits this planet makes its presence known. It appears that even though these works were written long ago the concepts of evils have always been a topic of conversation and thought and when those topics of morality surface we are often left with more questions than answers and less unity. When we look at Dante’s Inferno we are introduced to a man that goes through the many levels of hell and though out his journey we see what evil doings and evil persons that inhabit each level. A current example of this that we see in today’s world is through the eyes of a TV screen with shows like The Sopranos and Breaking Bad we can compare the characters of Tony Soprano and Walter White to Dante journey through hell while the seasons progress we see the changes of that character progressively get worse. Which leads me to this point why are we so enthralled with the “evil” doings of these characters that are on a permit path of self-destruction. Do we secretly wish that we had the guts to act and do the things they did in these series? In this case we see that evil is all over this earth and will continue to be due to the temptations of it. I think that these two stories show the many sides that evil can have over a person but what sets these two stories apart is that in one the judgement is already trust upon you were as in Beowulf you have a chance to redeem yourself. I know that Dante’s Inferno is a work of fiction but what makes it compelling to the reader is that it is a good story to make you question your own virtues in this life are you being selfish greedy and lacking empathy it makes you stop to think of how you are as a person in life that it makes you grateful that it is a work of fiction. When you put these works to together and compare them you are kind of takin back to earth in every sense of it because Beowulf is so relatable to the present day with the temptations of evil everywhere but it kind of puts you at ease that if you try your best to conquer evil or change your ways as a person it is obtainable. I think that this shows us that it is something that we can fight for whether it be drugs or anything else in this world that one might deem evil the chance to change it is there.
