Comparing Confronting Discrimination And Prejudice And Faith To The Fire

Improved Essays
The two films I found most reflecting concerning diversity and ethics were “Confronting Discrimination and Prejudice (2008)", and “Faith to the Fire (1993).” Faith to the Fire described the discrimination and intimidation of women nuns & member of a sisterhood, of the Catholic Church. “Confronting Discrimination," had multiple segments, each part occupied women. Each part took diversity further by showing perceptions of others in diverse situations involving women and men, of various ethnic groups. In my opinion, both films primarily concentrated on women and their difficulties.
The Female members of Catholicism represented in the movie, Faith to the Fire, faced obstacles in diversity during their participation in the Catholic Church.

A major theme in this section is the American struggle with racism. The chapter begins with the historic achievement of Barack Obama and ends with the differing circumstances/perceptions of the Rev. Jesse Jackson and his son Congressman Jesse Jackson III. Race is the classification of humans. While science has demonstrated that the concept of "race" is an illusion, it is still a very powerful illusion that shapes the way that humans act and think. "This is our first and most fundamental American Argument: Who, in our constitutional scheme, is a 'person'?"…

In the movie, racism is not well address because it doesn’t present the reality of blacks, at this period of time. In the other hand, in the novel, perfectly describes the truly emotions of the characters; their challenges and how they conquer those discriminations. Discrimination is wholly addressed in the book with a complete chapter and multiple scenarios of concrete examples: separated but equal societies, schools, neighborhoods, stores, and even morgue services. In the contrary, the movie shows a few illustrations of black characters as Grant, and Jefferson being reminded they were black, whether they were in jail or were educated. For instance, at the beginning, Grant is forced, by guiltiness from his aunt and from Miss Emma to visit Jefferson, who is sentenced to die for the death of a white man; act which he didn’t committed, but had to pay for.…

Why is racism so deeply rooted among American history? Why is something as simple as skin color such subject to prejudice and discrimination in today’s society? The United States of America is built off of cruel acts of slavery and racism. So many white Americans did not realize that the acts they performed were horribly wrong and inhumane. They excused themselves simply because darker skin meant that that person was also inferior.…

    Discriminatory Viewpoints

I agree that sometimes a person just has to be straight forward - and loud and clear - when expressing one's likes or dislikes. Nonetheless, when addressing a situation/topic such as racism and/or discrimination, a direct, abrupt approach, could amplify the situation. I agree with the approach, and I am advocate for getting issues out in plain sight, however, I would just advise that when dealing with an individual or group that has a particular mindset (set in their ways) one must be prepared for battle (lack of a better term). As you stated, the individual who is making the discriminatory remarks has a mindset to openly express these types of viewpoints at work (your words). Nonetheless, according to your post, you are very aware that being…

Throughout all of history, discrimination has always existed in society, whether it is the poor against the rich, female against male or white against black. In the texts I have studied in class, the authors/directors have portrayed their views on the topic of discrimination. In my report I will analyse the overarching theme of “Discrimination will always be prevalent in society” present in my four texts and discuss the connections between them. My first two texts I studied were “Brave New World” written by Aldous Huxley, and “Gattaca” directed by Andrew Niccol. Both these texts show that “Discrimination is a part of human nature”…

While most people think obstacles are a disadvantage I truly believe they can be turned into an advantage. Generally speaking, the most common obstacle anybody goes through is racism. It occurs everywhere, specifically at work and businesses environments. To illustrate, according to The American Dream is Still; Just a Dream For Most Minorities by Philip M.Deutsch, a MIT and University of Chicago School of Business research group made a test “to determine whether applicants with black-sounding names received fair treatment while applying for jobs..... Applicants with “white sounding names” received 50 percent more responses from companies than their black-sounding counterparts with equal credentials.”…
