Before starting this project I came across an article from Huffington Post called Beyond the Conservative/Liberal Catholic Divide, written by Matthew N. Schmalz. My first time reading this article I thought that Schmalz was just writing about the different stereotypes in the catholic religion and that it is possible to be a liberal catholic, which originally sparked my interest. Little did I know that there was so much more than just another thing that liberals and conservatives con not come to similar terms on from a local Catholic Church. As a community Saint Thomas Aquinas University Parish practices forgiveness and acceptance for some more than others.…

At first glance, Buddhism and Catholicism might seem to be as unlike as any two religions can possibly be. In some sense, this statement is correct. Originating from northern India, Buddhism views the rights and role of women in their society in much differently than Catholicism, which grants its roots from Judaism and was created in the now non-existent Roman Empire. The typical modern-day Catholic may assume that Buddhism holds its female population in a lower regard than their own religion, but according to some theological experts, this has been proven opposite. As dissimilar as these religions may seem, they do share some common elements, but their variances greatly outweigh this factor.…

While the sources and norms serve as the primary ways to achieve and know friendship with God there are different aids that are available to help one pursue one’s proper ends. The aids are broken into external and internal. There are also obstacles that stand in the way or interrupt one’s pursuit of the good; these are called vices. With the help of the external and internal aids, along with the pursuit of virtue one can overcome vice and reach one’s proper end.…

One of the central teachings in the Catholic faith is the importance of service to others. “Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve (Matthew 20:28, New International Version), His followers are called upon to show love for Him through service to others. Such an understanding of my calling as a follower of Christ has influenced my moral development and prompted me to show kindness and compassion towards others. As a moral value, “compassion combines an attitude of active regard for another’s welfare with an imaginative awareness and emotional response of sympathy, tenderness, and discomfort at another’s misfortune or suffering” (Beauchamp & Childress, 2013, p.37). The Biblical story of the good Samaritan – one of my…
