Comparing Characters In Bound And Disney Movies

Children around the world have been told fairy tales that arise from their culture. Some of these tales follow similar story lines. Generally a fairy tale has similar characteristics that allow them to be considered such a story. Often fairy tales occur either long ago or in an undisclosed time frame. Additionally, they highlight the problems that someone must overcome and the people who try to stop them. Occasionally the characters are helped through magical means. Some aspects of the two sources are similar and some are different. In comparing the book Bound and the Disney movie Cinderella both have a problem to be solved, a wide array of good versus evil characters, and a minimal amount of magical characters making it a fairy tale.

Much like Xing Xing gets help from her mother's golden shows and the spirits of her parents, Cinderella gets help from her magical Godmother. Once Xing Xing finds her mother’s clothes and tries on the shoes, she realizes that they fit even though her mother had bound feet. Not only did the shoes fit but they gave Xing Xing a sense of power, “Yet the shoes exudes grace as though anyone who wore them could walk through fear, through cruelty” (Napoli 154). The ability for Xing Xing to rise above the fear that was distilled in her before by her stepmother comes from the magic like slippers. Through the golden slippers Xing Xing’s mother gives her the confidence she never had. Not only does Xing Xing receive moral support she also talks to the spirits of her dead parents. Before she goes to the cave festival, “Xing Xing talked to the spirits of her mother and father” (Napoli 156). Since Xing Xing’s parents are dead she would not be capable of receiving advice from her parents. With the supernatural connection with her mother and father helps her succeed. Just like the Fairy Godmother helps her succeed, she is able to talk to them and allows her to feel content. The Fairy Godmother is magical because she is able to create a dress, transportation to the ball for Cinderella. Magic is crucial to make Bound a fairy tale. Xing Xing was ridiculed by Stepmother, she would cruelly called her names and look down upon her. Stepmother said “Lazy One, bring the firewood,” came the distant call. In the past year “Lazy One” had practically become Xing Xing’s household name” (Napoli 1). When Xing Xing lives with her Stepmother she loses her name and position in the household. Stepmother also took away the only thing Xing Xing cared about, and when she found the bones she new that stepmother had killed the white fish. “She wanted Stepmother to feel a lose like the one Xing Xing felt now” (Napoli 139). Xing Xing wanted her to feel pain because there was no reason for her to kill the fish. Stepmother only killed the fish out of spite and the need to have Xing Xing lose
