Compare And Contrast Two Sympathetic Character

This essay will contrast and compare two sympathetic characters from two significantly different stories. A sympathetic character is someone the reader likes and wants to be successful. It can be the main character of the story, the supporting characters and even the villains. If the character is likable because of the position he or she is put into, his or hers morals or physical appearance, then he or she is a sympathetic character. I will be comparing the character called Satyabati from “The Artist” and Mr. Loisel from “The Necklace”. Satyabati is a loving, caring mother who always puts her son’s well-being first. Satyabati knew that she was a very lucky lady since her husband was so enthusiastic about her hobby, to be an artist, therefore she was very appreciative towards him. Her husband bought art supplies for her many times and continually acclaimed her creations through saying “Well, this one is certainly very beautiful.” When Satyabati’s husband willingly put the responsibility of his wife and son in his brother Govinda’s hands, he did so because he believed that his brother would be the best provider and caregiver for his family members. Satyabati respected, loved and honored her husband’s wishes and claims for as long as she could, but when she noticed the extreme power and love for money that Govinda had she didn’t hesitate to give the responsibility of her son to her older nephew, who she believed would be a better influence towards her son. She did this through telling her nephew “My dear boy, you take charge of him. Keep him from the worship of money.” Since Satyabati’s main concern was her son she would do anything to make sure that he would be safe. This included going against her husband’s wishes. By going against his wishes she made sure that her son was in good hands. Loisel did anything he could to please her. How did Mr. Loisel please and support his wife? He was in general a very nice and caring person, which made people like him. Because of the love he radiated towards his friends and acquaintances they continually gave him gifts. One of these gifts were tickets to a ball, which Mr. Loisel knew his wife would appreciate and adore. When his wife told him that she would need a dress, he gave her the money that he had saved to buy a gun for himself. Even though he did not want to give the money to her, he did it because of the love he had towards her. He ended up him telling her "Very well. I 'll give you four hundred francs. But try and get a really nice dress with the money." Anything Mr. Loisel’s wife Mathilde would think, say or act out was because of selfishness. When Mathilde first got the tickets for the ball from her loving husband she became very upset and started crying since she knew that she didn’t own any appropriate clothing for that kind of event. When Mathilde later lost her friend Madame Forestier’s necklace in her hurry returning back home from her ball she did not even thank her husband for all the sacrifices he made to give a copy of the necklace back to Madame Forestier. Mr. Loisel continually cheers his wife on through giving her calming, supportive encouragements such as "Why, the dress you go to the theatre in. It looks very nice, to me...".
