Channel 7’s main purpose is to achieve high ratings, therefore producing profit. ABC news is funded by the government, and therefore they do not need to worry about their ratings as much, this allows the ABC to include more educational broadcasts to inform us of what is happening in our country and others more in depth, rather than skim over many different stories with little information about them. ABC news reports on more international news and other large issues that occur around the world, whereas channel 7 focuses on local events that are less significant, yet they are more captivating and appeal to a larger audience. For example both channels did a sporting update, channel 7’s segment went for a total of 5 minutes. Sports is not really considered very important in the grand scheme of things, there are more important things to do news segments on. This is clearly shown on ABC News’s segment time of the sports update, it lasted only 37 seconds. Channel 7 uses more dramatic and informal language to convey information in a more exaggerated form, this make it more entertaining for their target audience as they don’t have to think as much about what they are saying. ABC news is completely different in the way that they use formal and informative language, appealing to an audience that is interested in an accurate portrayal of the event. A big story for both stations about the Eddie Betts banana incident gives a good example of the differences in language. In channel 7s report they used phrases such as, racism, scandal, tearfully pleaded, swiftly outed, emotion wrecking and whisked away. These strong word choices provided not only information but entertainment, debates and discussion on social media. ABC news used phrases such as expressed remorse, publicly, scorned, apologising and hurled a banana. These word choices provided an accurate description of what happened. Channel 7 chose such strong, attention seeking words, to make the report more exciting and to get an emotional response. ABC were not as over the top with their word choice, they used necessary words to describe the story as best as they could.
