Comparing Catholics And Secular Humanists: What Happens After Death

Improved Essays
For many different religions they all have their own theory/purpose as to what life is and how we came to be on this earth. To find out whether our life has any meaning after death or how we were brought onto this earth I will be looking at two different religious groups such as secular humanists and catholics to see what they believe on the existential questions.

Question one -
Secular Humanists: What happens after death?
Secular Humanists believe that when a person dies there can be no further existence of the dead person, they believe that we only have one life and once we die all that is left in the world is the makeup of our bodies, there can be no further existence and the only way to remember them is through the memories shared with them (Lucretius (c95-55 BCE) On the Nature of the Universe) . I think that them being their own religion has an upbringing on many people who are unsure on what they do or don’t believe because humanists look at different perspectives on the universe. Secular humanists look at the scientific and naturalistic view of the world to justify what happens after death, this gives them more of a specific view on death as no one really knows if we actually can go to heaven, hell or purgatory due to the fact that it has not be proven.

I believe that Catholics are also justified to their reasoning on what happens after death through the declaration of the bible, God, sacred scriptures and the teaching of the church. For Catholics they believe that as soon as we die our souls are separated from the body and taken to God where he will decide if they either go to heaven, purgatory or hell. Catholics are right to believe this through their findings and the belief of others as the teaching of God has been around for so long that it would be wrong to have such a lie faced upon

Rowe and taken from the publication Philosophy of Religion. As a whole, I would say that this article is a balanced and informative piece on the arguments for and against an after- life. The article even goes on to show the arguments on what, if there is an afterlife, that might be like.…

The afterlife is referred to as the remaining human life that exists after an individual’s death. Scheffler uses this in a thought experiment in which a person is asked to imagine that he will live a normal life span. However, thirty days after his death, the earth, along with humanity and any other form of life on earth, would be destroyed. Scheffler argues that certain activities, such as cancer research, all forms of art, and procreation, are considered to matter or are motivated by the idea of continuous human existence after death. Concluding that what matters most to humans is the survival of humanity (p. 751, para 2); Frankfurt, while responding to Scheffler’s proposal, argues that what matters to humans is independent from the existence…

It’s tough to remember the first time that I heard the age-old question about the purpose of life because I’ve heard it so much. However, the first time that I really took time to think about this question was a few weeks ago. I recall waking up in the morning and asking myself a simple question, “What am I looking forward to today?” To my surprise, I couldn’t answer the question and I realized that I was currently living an extremely boring and meaningless life. I then stumbled upon another question, “What is the purpose of my life and what am I going to do in the future?”…
