By: Jessica Svoboda “Casablanca” and “Plan 9 from Outer Space” are two very different movies. They each have very opposite writing and direction techniques. They both, however, should have the same skill in acting right? Wrong. They are on opposite ends of the movie spectrum. With “Casablanca” on the good side, and “Plan 9 from Outer Space” on the bad side. By telling a little more about the actors, comparing and contrasting, and picking out good or bad scenes; we can determine why there is such a big difference in acting. The actors in these movies have very different skill levels.

During the start of “Plan 9 from Outer Space” however the actor is reading off of que cards. He also has no emotion, and a long drawn out voice. This continues throughout the movie. Some people show no reaction such as the pilot’s wife when the UFO goes over. She just falls down with no emotion on her face. Not only that, but when the people react to things in the movie they almost seem to have no reaction. In “Casablanca” you can tell the emotion in their voice. They talk in a way that shows whether they are happy, sad, mad, or anything in between. Whereas, in “Planet 9 from Outer Space”, most of the characters have long drawn out voices with no emotion in them. They talk in a regular voice as if they are bored of acting. Some of the actors seemed a little less bored, but then you could tell they were acting by their voice. It almost seemed like a bad high school play production with the way that they talked. The facial expressions are so bad that they have to narrate the movie so people can tell what the actors are trying to portray. There are also a few other things that the actors from Planet 9 are missing besides their facial expressions. Their body movements were very un-
