In the epic ¨Beowulf¨ there is an obvious theme of good vs evil. The good is represented by Beowulf himself, and the evil is represented by monsters. This paper goes in depth about the three monsters in the story. Theses monsters are Grendel, Grendel's Mother, and The Dragon. Grendel is the first of the monsters to appear in the epic ¨Beowulf¨. He is a huge dragon, with powerful jaws, humongous claws with scary talons, and is pure evil. It is shown that he is pure evil when Beowulf's men tried attacking Grendel with their swords and the swords did not even scratch him. The only thing that kill him was Beowulf fighting with his bare hands. Grendel represents ¨death the devourer¨, because he attacks the people of Herot for no reason and shows no remorse. While reading the epic the reader gets a strong feeling of hatred for him, and also a strong sense of fear that prevailed in the writing. In the story Grendel is referred to as ¨bearing god's hatred¨ (pg 21). The next monster to appear is Grendel's Mother. She represents ¨Guardian of the Death Mound¨, this is shown when she takes Grendel's arm and keeps it with the rest of his body at her home. She does not just go around killing for no reason, like Grendel. She …show more content…
The Dragon is just a normal fire breathing dragon. He attacks Beowulf´s home many years after Grendel and Grendel's Mother. The Dragon represents ¨Protector of the Treasures¨, this is shown by The Dragon having a huge pile of gold and other treasures in his cave. He started attacking Beowulf's people, only when someone stole a piece of his treasure. This is the last monster Beowulf ever fought because while he was fighting and killing The Dragon, he was fatally injured and later died. The reader feels hatred and fear towards The Dragon. The feeling of hatred is prominent because he is the reason Beowulf dies, and the feeling of fear is because he is a fire breathing dragon killing

Beowulf is making a bad name for hero’s around the world. A hero should not be boastful, they should do something for the benefit of the people, not for himself. Grendel is the first of three beasts that Beowulf is tasked with defeating in this epic. Grendel ensues immeasurable terror in the hearts of the Danes, but unlike many folkloric creatures, he has a human personality. While Grendel is by no means a dynamic character, he does have the motivation to wreak havoc upon Heorot Hall. He also has enough reason to define a cause for his aggression, and his tendency to be a pariah is clear since he and his mother are the only characters associated with Hell. The mention of Grendel being of "Cain's clan, whom the creator had outlawed and condemned as outcasts"(106-107) was likely shocking to Christian audiences, who knew Cain as a malignant soul from the Bible.…

Grendel, since he is a descendent of Cain, is one that is cursed by God himself, forced to wage “his lonely war, inflicting constant cruelties” on people (116: line:164-165). I would say that he is evil because of the hatred of his neighbors have made him bitter, but he is also evil because he is a demon. They call him a “fiend out of hell”, one that loves to work evil in the world (114: line 100). Even though he may be bitter because of the resentment, the fact that he is a demon that came out of hell makes him a monster, something that is evil from the roots of his origin. He is linked to the man Cain who was cursed by God himself for killing his own brother, an event that would conjure up significant resentment of the human race, part of…

Grendel vs. Grendel Grendel. This name struck fear in men and have even made the strongest tremble in terror. However is he just a monster that’s “hoping to kill…?” (Glencoe, 394) or is Grendel a whole other monster , one who thinks, feels, and has desires just like any other person. This insight occurs in John Gardner’s “Grendel” which makes Grendel seem a lot more complex than Beowulf’s Grendel.…

Grendel's behavior throughout this novel is that of a complete monster. He has no remorse and will destroy & kill anyone in his way, with no purpose. A quote from the book says “his glee was demonic , picturing the mayhem: before morning he would rip life from limb and devour them, feed on their flesh”, and this shows how Grendel's behavior in this epic is iniquitous and how every evening he would attack the mead hall and feed on the flesh of the humans there. Also to elaborate on Grendel's purpose and…

Ultimately, both monsters are defeated by Beowulf who is depicted as a good servant of God throughout the story. Once again suggesting that faith in God will prevail.…

“Thus Beowulf bore himself with valor; he was formidable in battle yet behaved with honor and took no advantage; never cut down a comrade who was drunk, kept his temper and, warrior that he was, watched and controlled his God-sent strength and his outstanding natural powers” (page 88, line 2177-2183). Grendel is at first, a creature who empathizes for his pain. It causes the reader to question the good and evil; whether the men are the heroes and Grendel is the monster, or if Men are the true horrors. Grendel is just a poorly misunderstood character, but due to the way society treated him, he slowly grew into the monster known as the Wreaker of Meadhalls. One can see that in the beginning, Grendel is a pathetic creature just looking for someone to understand him and to talk to him. But the men do not give him any of that; they abuse and misjudge him.…
