Comparing Beowulf And Merlin

Two Tales, Two Heros
When the word “hero” comes mind, people begin to think of many different characteristics which a true hero possess. While there are countless traits that can qualify someone to be considered heroic, there are three qualities that everyone would agree shape a heroic figure; wisdom, a sense of honor, and the ability to overcome a difficult conflict. Beowulf, a Geatish warrior who is revealed to be one of the most noble men of the Anglo-Saxon time period, and Merlin, a legendary wizard who performed honorable tasks during Arthurian times, are two characters that model lives of truly heroic figures. In the epic poem of Beowulf, Denmark has been invaded by a vicious demon named Grendel who is a murdering machine. The only hope for the Danes to survive is to call upon a young Gaet warrior who is very skilled, named Beowulf. Beowulf actively used his wisdom by waiting for Grendel in the dark of night when he is unsuspecting while he made his atrocious attack at the mead hall. As a wizard, Merlin uses his magic powers to strategically benefit the people, even though he does not respect Queen Mab. In fact, he often tries to use the very magic powers that she gave him to try and defeat her. While Merlin is a strong and noble character, he also shows his capability of loving, losing, and making mistakes. His courage and vulnerability to admit his flaws and imperfections make him an even more courageous and heroic character. Quite often, Merlin experienced difficulties and trials.
