TITLE (HOOK)GIVING UP Short stories are put together in a way that the reader can find meaning on what is being unsaid more then what is being said, allowing the reader to read in between the lines and think critically. Short stories compared to novels have less content, therefore making it more difficult to find the meaning, but with the use of elements of fiction one can effectively grasp as much information as possible. One common theme for “Tall Tales from the Mekong Delta” by Kate Braverman and “Aurora” by Junot Diaz” is destructive relationships and drug influence. The authors of Tall Tales and Aurora use characterization and figurative language to interconnect the thought that when undesirable temptations are displayed to human kind, it can lead to bad decisions and no self-control of the inner self that ultimately lead to physical/verbal abuse and drug use. Characterization is a fundamental piece of a story, allowing the readers to create their own perspective and interpretation of the character.…

The character in a story is the main foundation in any story, essay, or any other form of writing. These characters not only give the writing a purpose, but present the irony, symbols, and conflicts in the stories. Without the main character there would not be any sort of writing. The main character may also be dynamic, which means the change as the story goes on, or they may be flat, which meants that they don’t change. From the many stories we read in our class, I fell in love with the character Rochelle, from the story “The Bride” by author Christine Granados.…

Characters in books tend to represent a thought, feeling, moral, or an actual person. Characters tend to be dynamic, meaning throughout the course of the story, the character changes in a significant way; this pertains to the progression of the story, and can also symbolize some event that changed our world. These events can be symbolized through static characters as well, as commonly an effect of satires. A popular satire on everything ranging from religion to our way of life is Restaurant at the End Of the Universe by Douglas Adams. The characters in Restaurant at the End Of the Universe tend to remain relatively static, because they represent various things, that have refused to change.…

Conflict, on the other hand, will always involve the protagonist, and it can either be internal or external. Internal conflict, which is the conflict between person and self, is one that happens within the mind of the protagonist. Instances of internal conflict are whereby a person struggles between right or wrong, or where one has to make a huge decision.…

“Beowulf” is one of the oldest and most legendary tales of strength and valor. It only makes sense that this story would eventually be adapted by Hollywood into a film. Despite the story being as engaging as it already is, the most recent film adaption strays far from the epic poem. These changes affect the characters, themes, and plot. Though both the poem and the film are good on their own, the film’s meaning does not stay true to the original story it pays homage to.…
