Copland describes them as the sensuous plane, the expressive plane, and the sheerly musical plane. The reasoning for listening to music for the pure rhythm and harmony is the sensuous plane. As I was violating this social norm, I felt strange and out of place. Before embarking on my soundwalk, I had a few basic expectations of sounds I would encounter, mostly based on prior memories of wandering MIT’s campus. I knew what the soft, low murmurs should sound like when traversing the corridors. I knew to expect the clip-clop of hard stepping walkers in the silent tunnels, and the high pitched buzzing and whining of electrical components overhead. Outside, the wind would make soft, mid pitched whuuu and shhh noises, which would serve as background for trees that would swish or rustle, people who’s voices would carry far in the open area, and the clanking and clanking metallic sounds of the construction that constantly plagues MIT. During the soundwalk, I was constantly surprised by the amount of detailed and minute differences in sounds I was able to hear when paying attention.…
In recent years, musicians have routinely used their voices in efforts to support or protest politicians and their policies. Some artists choose to release public statements in support of or decrying political candidates, while others choose to support or decry candidates by penning or dedicating songs to them. Oftentimes, especially in this past Presidential election cycle, musicians have denied political candidates permission to use their music in campaigning efforts. Some of these artists may choose to do so in efforts to keep their art as apolitical as possible, but many choose to deny political candidates permission to use their music in protest of them.
