One of the most common human qualities shown by each individual is the ability to judge others. Although it is neither morally correct nor kind to do, it is what we know, and how we live. Carl Jung, a Swiss psychiatrist had a profound belief in the philosophy that, “Everything that irritates us/ brings on our judgment about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.” One source, in telling of Jung’s belief states that he “considered spirituality a central part of the human journey.” These quotes depict Jung’s outcry for the wellness of others, and how others opinions and actions can lead us to making decisions as well as reflecting on ourselves. Aylmer, the main character in “The Birthmark” has a special hatred for the crimson hand on his wife’s cheek. One might see the mark as a beautiful feature differentiating oneself from the world, but Aylmer saw it as an imperfection, which he found necessary to be removed. In speaking to his wife Georgiana, Aylmer states, “ you came so nearly perfect from the hand of Nature that this slightest possible defect, which we hesitate whether to term a defect or a beauty, shocks me, as being the visible mark of earthly imperfection” (Birth).It is irrational as to why Aylmer can not accept the uniqueness of his wife. He disapproves Jung’s philosophy because after the encounterance with the birthmark, Aylmer does not change his opinions, but rather kills his wife while trying to perfect her. After the death of his Georgiana, Aylmer does not become more accepting or forgiving. Similarly, Goodman Brown shows his concern and sadness towards the townsmen, and old teachers, as will as towards Faith when he sees them in the woods attending the Devil’s meeting. He frowns upon their incapability to follow their Puritan beliefs. Further, this example does not approve Jung’s statement because after Goodman Brown returns from the woods, he does not replenish his faith in his Puritan religion, yet he no longer sees the good in the world. He could have taken this experience and
