At the start of the novel Hazel’s introduction of herself is very different against how Augustus describes Hazel in chapter one. Hazel has a negative view upon herself and her life. She describes her situation with her cancer, followed by depression and with with a Paige haircut while, Augustus on the other hand gives readers a better picture of how she really looks, “Pixie-haired gorgeous girl”. In this case it is a matter of opinion upon their state. Hazel has to deal with the fact that death could be so close, while Augustus has been cancer free for a while now.
