Comparing Atheism And Agnosticism

Decent Essays
Personally, just like one of my friends, I was baptized and raised into a Catholic family. Despite this, I grew up to be agnostic. I can seriously agree with Buchanan’s claim that more and more younger people are converting to atheism and agnosticism. This could obviously be for many reasons but I like to think that as society grows people begin to think for themselves and not let others tell them what their beliefs should be. The humongous problem as a result of this is that many extremely religious individuals see this “new and changed” generation as a group of sinners all revolving around their religious beliefs. As well as with something as huge as gay marriage, extremely religious people refuse to account gays as respectable people because

I found that out of my seven interviews those who were older were not open to the concept of same-sex marriage or abortion. I talked to Miss. Maggie, a widow who had been attending Saint Thomas Aquinas University Parish, who told me that, “The gays are welcome to the Catholic Church by all means, but we will never support them in getting married. We are taught to love everyone and that God loves everyone this is just one of those things that is not okay in Catholicism,” (Maggie). The college students who attended were not completely supportive of abortion in terms of the mother being in a life-threatening situation or if she was raped. All of them did believed in gay marriage though, some weren’t thrilled about it, but they still believed that the Catholic Church should accept them as they are and welcome them with no judgment.…

For example, gay marriages were considered illegal in the United States and people in our society were considered wrong and evil for accepting gay marriage; that it was wrong to marry the same sex and the only people that were allowed to marry were couples of the opposite sex. This is all due to the fact that heterosexual marriages are accepted to be normal in our society. Now over the years, gay marriage in not illegal anymore; people have altered their perspectives on how they see gay couples. Many people have positive and negative views on them, but overall they are more acceptable today than they were in the past century in our…

People tend to use denominations to try and classify themselves. Individuals are quick to tell where they attend church because they take pride in it. Most of the church population finds themselves going to what church is famous within the community, to a family church, or to what church fits their personality. A religious sect usually correlates to someone’s secular life in some way. Religious denomination is weakly related to both types of educational goals and seems to have no real influence on occupational goals.…

1 John is a response to Gnosticism, which had a dual view on spirit and the physical world (Utley, 2013). They felt that anything on a higher plane, such as God, was inherently good, and anything on the physical plane was bad. They argue that even Jesus was here only in spirit. 1 John spoke out against these alleged false teachers by using words that describe Jesus in a physical nature, such as “in the flesh,” and “the word of life…made visible.” The author even uses the word “we” to state that all Johannine believers had seen and felt the presence of Jesus in their lives (Harris, 2014).…

In the article On Being an Atheist H.J. McCloskey attempts to explain to us the “grounds upon which theists base their belief in God, of the inadequacy of these grounds and why Atheists believe that there is no God.” (p. 62) Throughout the article, McCloskey attempts to use these three proofs, the cosmological proof, the teleological proof, and the argument from design, to explain why theists are incorrect to believe in God. Although McCloskey has made a very strong case, he was not able to fully prove his points because many arguments or defeaters, exist against his proofs and for the fact that all his proofs are not able to be judged individually but are to be used together in theism. In doing so McCloskey has failed to provide his point…

In 1996 a national poll was taken because of the growing number of gay and lesbian couples in the United States. Did the general populace accept this rising form of sexuality? Those polls showed that only seventeen years ago 68% of American adults opposed gay and same sex marriage stating that marriage should be “between man and woman” and that only 27% agreed that same sex unions should be made legal for “any two people” (Wikipedia.com). This year they took another poll and the results were shocking: a record high of 55% of American adults are for same sex marriage and family dynamics! Only 40% continue to oppose such unions!…

Quid Sit: What is Anthropomorphism and Agnosticism In Danielou’s chapter 2, The God of the Philosophers, two terms ,anthropomorphism and agnosticism, are brought to the reader’s attention midway through the chapter regarding God’s personality. Anthropomorphism is when human characteristics are given to God, and agnosticism is opposite of agnosticism because it means that God is either unknown or unknowable. “Le Roy puts the antinomy as follows: Either we shall define the word personality and so it fall into the pit of anthropomorphism, or we shall leave it undefined and fall into the no less terrible pit of agnosticism.”…

Dat To An Atheist Personal Philosophy “Why are you an atheistic?” That is the question I keep receiving when I tell people that I am an atheist, a person who believes in certainty that there is no god or gods. How should education be taught to the upcoming generations? Richard Rorty’s article, Education as Socialization and as Individualism, explores the two radically different and opposing views on this matter: the political right’s view and the political left’s view. The political right believes that education should be taught through more of a socialization method. The political left, however, strongly holds that education should take a more individualistic route. On the right, it is considered that if one uses reason in education, that it will help battle the temptations of one’s passions or sins, which in turn will lead to freedom.…
