Comparing Arwen And Luthien In The Lord Of The Rings

Improved Essays
Arwen is referenced to Luthien in The Lord of the Rings. One of the reasons for this is that Arwen story is similar to that of Luthien. She is an immortal being that falls in love with a mortal, which she gives up her immortality for. Both had a father the disapproved of the match and gave the mortal men a task to complete to be worthy of their daughter love. Beren has to get one Silmaril and Aragorn has to reclaim the throne and become the king of Gondor. Yet the difference come from the fact that unlike Luthien Arwen does not do much to help Aragorn to complete his task. Even though Arwen does not help there is still something to be said for the fact that she is compared to Luthien, that Arwen might have power and be strong will. The reader

In the play Antigone, both the titular character, Antigone, and her uncle, Creon, are tragic heroes. To truly see how both are tragic heroes, one would need to break down the definition of tragic hero, and see how each part applies to both characters. The first part of the definition states that a tragic hero is a person who gets caught in a series of events that lead to disaster. For both Creon and Antigone this could be seen as Creon’s decision “that no one may bury or mourn [Polynices], but see him unlamented, unburied”(Lines 29-31) . This leads to Antigone deciding to doing so anyways, which sets of the chain of events that leads to each of their deaths.…

The film is an effective interpretation because the film was entertaining, viewers would be able to believe it was a real film from now about Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, and the film was moving. The film was entertaining because the film had parts that were humorous, intriguing, and sorrowful. One of the humorous parts of the film was when Mercutio was at the Capulet’s party and started dancing in the dress he had on.…

Similar to Antigone by Sophocles, officer Ervin and Antigone both believed that some of the civil laws their civilizations have are unjust and should be reconsidered. Antigone's love for her brother, Haemon's anger at his father, and Creon’s Pride are all examples of how acting on emotion and not fully thinking about one's actions can cause many negative affects. Antigens love for polyneices causes many problems for not only herself but also for others. “Take this hand of mine to bury the dead…challenge Creon to his face” (195) Although Antigone knows burying her brother is civilly wrong, she still chooses to do it because it's morally right.…

During the relative time of Odysseus and Antigone, a hero could be a man or a woman, someone who belonged to a divine ancestry, who was favored by the Gods, and showed great courage and strength in one’s actions. When reflecting upon heroes from the works we have read, the first two that came to my mind were Sophocles 's Antigone, and Homer’s Odysseus. These two characters exhibit heroic actions throughout both works, and stick to their ways by portraying perseverance and confidence. Sophocles’ Antigone is about a passionate woman who arrives in Thebes to see that both of her brothers are dead. Her brother, Polyneices, is not being granted a proper burial because the infamous leader, Kreon, has prohibited a burial for him to occur.…

Beowulf is considered a heroic figure in the poem, because he protected the Danes from the beasts and in the movie he is shown more as a liar than a hero. Another difference in the book Grendel slays the Danes in the night, while they are sleeping, so that none have the chance to challenge him. But in the movie it shows Grendel bursts into Heorot in the night, but the Danes are awake, and fully witness his killing. In the book, after Grendel's death, his mother goes to Heorot to avenge him, but being weaker than her son, only makes off with a single thane. But in the movie, Beowulf is asleep in Heorot after slaying Grendel when he has a nightmare about Grendel's mother, awaking from it to see that she has silently murdered many of the men Heorot.…

Both one-act plays Antigone and Trifles are centralized by the themes of femininity and law vs. moral rights and beliefs. Antigone is a strong hard headed woman who stands up for what she believes is right, just as Mrs. Hale does in Trifles. The two woman protagonists share many character traits as they each overcome conflicts of male vs. female and law vs. moral rights and beliefs. Because Antigone was written in the ancient Greek era, I feel the influence it has on Susan Glaspell’s early 20th-century play, Trifles is more impactful than realized. The influence Antigone has on Trifles is shown through each play’s plot, characterization, shared theme, and symbolism.…

Maleficent is a 2014 American adventure fantasy film directed by Robert Stromberg from a screenplay by Linda Woolverton and starring Angelina Jolie, Sharlto Copley, Elle Fanning, Sam Riley, Imelda Staunton, Juno Temple, and Lesley Manville. Loosely based on Charles Perrault's original fairy tale and inspired by Walt Disney's 1959 animated film, Sleeping Beauty, Maleficent portrays the story from the perspective of the eponymous antagonist, depicting her conflicted relationship with the princess and king of a corrupt kingdom. Sleeping beauty is a story showing a more sympathetic, nuanced version of the iconic fairy tale. On the other hand, Maleficent which is adapted from Sleeping Beauty story claims to be a deeper look at the story behind Disney's.
