Before the marriage, if the wife had any valuables or property, the husband would gain them after. After marriage, the husband became the wife’s legal guardian. Often, if there were a lot of people with the same last name, the wife would take the husband’s first name instead of his last. The women were expected to have many children and the average family size was 5, including the parents.
The similarities between couples in the 15th century and couples now are hard to find, but there are a couple. First of all, in some cases the women are still expected to stay at home, take care of the house, make the food, and watch over the children while the men are expected to do all of the work outside of the house and bring home the money.
