We all know that we make choices in our lives that ultimately change who we are and what the remainder of our lives would be like. For Native American authors Sherman Alexie and Joe Suina there is no difference between the two, both have similar stories but from different perspectives. Sherman Alexie wrote an essay called Indian Education, it was about his experience (try) in his hometown on the reservations and having to go to an almost all white school. Joe Suina wrote an essay similar to Indian Education called And then I went to school.…

People we look up to are our role models or modern day heroes because they’re relatable, they give us an idea of how our future should look and the path we should follow. Both articles “What Makes Superman So Darned American?” by Gary Engle and “Larger Than Life” by Jenny Lyn Bader give insight on their idea of role models or heroes. Bader focuses on explaining why a more realistic role model such as, the people around us that go through real situations with consequences is better. By creating that type of character, Alexie therefore can make a better connection with his audience of Indian youth, because they most likely had a similar upbringing, and have a similar attitude. This type of attitude can also appeal to Alexie’s secondary audience (society as a whole), because people would be more apt to listen to Alexie’s argument if he did not come across as pretentious. An appeal to pathos is also achieved through Alexie’s mention of an uneven childhood that was often filled with doubts if they could support themselves since it makes the audience feel sympathy for his situation. Alexie uses this appeal to pathos in order to strengthen his appeal to ethos, and to gain his audiences’ sympathy and attention. Through these two appeals, Alexie is able to make a connection between his family’s situation and the humanities.…
