They were treated as objects or things that didn’t count in our country , but in Democracy Langston tells us that he too needs his own freedom as in this part of the poem he says , “ I live here, too. I want freedom . Just as you.” ( Hughes , pg.112) , he’s establishing that he too has a right to be human in a America , he also states “ I do not need my freedom when I’m dead. I cannot live on tomorrow’s bread.” ( Hughes , pg. 112 ) He’s obviously saying that he cannot wait any longer for his freedom , also that he wants his freedom right there and now he won’t need it later but that he really needs it now . The last quote Hughes establishes is “ I have as much right As the other fellow has To stand On my own two feet And own the land.” He explains how not only caucasian men get to have the rights, specialities , and opportunities and he also means that he doesn’t need anyone else to support him but himself .
