This story is about a black girl and a white girl. In the story, you do not know which one is white and which one is black. The girls live in an orphanage but they are not orphans. The writer says, “They were dumped there.” They are the only non-orphans at the orphanage. At first, the girl named Twyla does not think that she will get along with her roommate named Roberta. They eventually become best friends. Twyla is at the orphanage longer than Roberta because Roberta’s mother comes to take her back home. The girls lose contact with each other for a while. In the story in does not say how long Twyla stays at the orphanage. Eventually, Twyla marries and has a son. They also go through some of the same things. Twyla and Roberta “lose” their mothers and Lantin loses his wife. The books plots also end the same. All of the characters are unhappy and sad. The plots are also the same in how the characters are struggling to live happily. There are also many differences in both of the plots of these stories. In the beginning of The Jewelry everyone is happy without a care in the world. In Recitatif, however, it starts out sad with the girls being given to the orphanage by their mothers. The plots are also different in how they act with each other. In The Jewelry Lantin is only happy when he is with his wife. In Recitatif the girls are happy when the are together as children but mad or upset with each other when they are together as adults. In conclusion, the stories are similar and different in their own unique ways. The Jewelry is a relativity happy story until the wife dies and Recitatif is a sad story all around. Both of these stories end in the same sad manner, all of the characters are unhappy or sad. Overall, these are wonderful stories to read and I would recommend them to anyone who I think would enjoy these stories as much as I
