Compare Mother To Son And A Celebration Of Grandfathers

Think about how personal experiences shape the way that one thinks, acts, and even speaks. Are these things positive or negative? Why do these experiences do this, and how do they affect everyone else's values? For instance, compare the two texts, "Mother to Son" and "A Celebration of Grandfathers". These two texts are great examples of how personal experiences shape people's values. Although the two texts were written at different times, they share a very similar way of how personal experiences shape the values of the characters.

To further explain, the mother in Langston Hughes' poem "Mother to Son" has had a rough life and knows that things can be very hard at times. She wants to express to her son to never give up even when things get very hard. She thinks this because of her own personal experiences she has gone through. To explain, based on her values, she compares life to a staircase and says that "life for me ain't been no crystal stair". Instead, she explains a plain, bare one. She tells her son "Don't you fall now" and "For I'se still goin'". She uses her personal experiences and values to tell her son to keep going no matter what. She does this in hope that this will affect him positively and he will follow her words and never give up.

Although these texts show two different people that value two different things, they both have great messages and teach words of wisdom along with encouragement. Both books have someone passing down their values to their son or grandson. People do have personal values based on their personal experiences and use them to teach other people the same values that they can carry on
