O.T. and E.T. are hard farm workers; in contrast, Mrs. May’s sons have no desire to farm, but work as an insurance salesman and an intellectual. O’Connor specifically made these characters different to show two types of society: upper and lower class. O.T. and E.T. are the understatement of twins because they practically have the same life. The twins both married a French woman in the midst of the war; however, both being injured they came home to go to agricultural school.…

The contrast in the land of the English colonies, with stark contrast between the North and the South created considerable economic disparity between the two regions. Dreams of undiscovered financial hotbeds drove the early colonization attempts, as is the case with Virginia, the first English colony in America. The investors behind the Virginia colony, the London Company, looked for a profitable market, which they soon found in tobacco (Brinkley 37). Maryland, another Chesapeake colony, was also supported by the cash crop of tobacco. Tobacco actually made up more than 72% of the exports in the Upper South from 1768 to 1782, and the next closest exports were grains, making up almost 20% of the exports (packet 25).…

Do not go gentle into that good night by Dylan Thomas is about the subject of death, but the theme is focused on fighting against death and gives the reader a sense of control over death by never giving up. The poem tells us not to give up easily when it says “Rage, rage against the dying the light” (Thomas, 659), which indicates a fight. The tone is angry and it uses assonance by repeating O’s sounds over and over, showing repetition similar to someone punching someone repeatedly giving the reader a feeling of control over death. The use of assonance by using words like do, not, go, into, and good create a repetitive effect of doing something over and over and never giving up. There is a one simile to point out in the fifth stanza where it…

Ironically, this divide based on colour of skin changed how individuals lived.as coloured people belong in a poor and environment, compared to white people who belong in a rich and luxurious city. This social divide has created false attributes towards both sides of town: coloured people are referred to as ‘dirty’ and white people are referred to as ‘normal’ people. In other words, white people are held even more superior and coloured people are treated and respected much worse. Coloured maids are not able to express their emotions, but rather obey every they are given by a white person, as if they are robots or slaves, not human beings. This social divide has driven the plot of this novel, as Aibileen, Minny, and Skeeter eventually begin to take action against this racism, leading to next argument, hope.…
