In the essay “Richer and Poorer Accounting for inequality.” authored by Jill Lepore it discusses the effects and statistics behind economic inequality in America. The essay brings to surface some statistical, as well as personable examples of how inequality is relevant today. In Jill Lepore’s essay, when closely analyzing her text it is clear that she utilizes the rhetorical strategies of logos, ethos, and pathos very intentionally. It is with the use of these rhetorical strategies that she effectively persuades readers of academia towards understanding the importance of recognizing the growing issue of inequality in the United States.…

In the article “The Comparison Trap” by Rebecca Webber, she makes superb points on the subject at hand, which is looking at the negative and positive of comparing yourself to others. It can go both ways just depends on the aspect you take on whatever you're comparing yourself to and I also find a delight in the fact that she uses a real life example at which you can relate to. A point I would like to make for a subject she could have touched on within the article is the comfort zone. The comfort zone can create a positive reaction to comparing oneself to another by stepping out of your comfort zone. Which can consist of just simply taking a different way to work or learning something new.…

The idea of social inequality as positive is that it is helping the society as a whole. But the idea of social inequality as negative is because the government is giving money and resources to people in need but it is not to everyone. This seems unfair to some people in society because they work hard to take care of their families. But, on the other hand there is families that have fallen on hard times and really do need the extra help to have a better chance of being in control of their…

In Gary S. Becker’s and Kevin Murphy’s article, “The Upside of Inequality”, they argue that the increase of the income inequality gap is beneficial to our economy because of the reason behind it; now that more people are investing in their “human capital” by pursuing higher education, the higher rewards from this is the cause of inequality. They elaborate on how the rise is due to the fact that education is emphasized in the labor market, such that more people who are investing in education have higher rewards. The income gap is growing because of the increasing opportunities to advance. Becker explains that the potential of advancement through education is higher than ever, it has especially beneficial for people of color and women. With…

On the surface, envy seems to be one of the deadly vices that many believe is very clear cut. Julie Barnhill states in her article ‘The Comparison Trap’, “every day, everywhere, from every age bracket, and even despite our faith in Jesus Christ, we size each other up, comparing supposed weaknesses and trying to make ourselves feel better by ignoring or brushing off one another” (Barnhill, 2004). When looking at envy this way it seems that this vice is a superficial, unimportant part of life that we just need to deal with. A survey conducted in 2008-2009 asked respondents to rate what they believed to be the deadliest sin to be and envy was rated last with 0% by all respondents, male and female (Capps & Haupt, 2011). Rebecca DeYoung states…

The article Structured Inequality in the United State, establishes the argument of racial equality being hard to obtain, in a system that has been flawed from the start. The flaw in the system is the favorable treatment of one racial group(whites) over others. The systems establishment of laws such as who could own land, who could vote and worse who was considered a free person created a dominant group and a subordinate group determined by race and not merit. An analogy comes to mind, if you build your house on an uneven foundation troubles will no doubt arise. Structured Inequality in the United States for me creates a new avenue of thinking.…

Society has developed a constantly repeating cycle of oppression and inequality. However, using the power of newfound technologies has led to the individual to be able to research, speak out, and unites with others to break free of the grasp of large corporations. Professor Tim Wu analyzes the growth of digital technology and the internet in, Father and Son, and he concludes that: “It may be true, today, that the individual holds more power than at any time in the past century”(Wu 556). Wu also realizes that if society is not changed now, then individuals will continue to lose power to make a difference when he says: “Whether or not he can hold on to it is another matter”(Wu 556). In Cathy Davidson’s Project Classroom Makeover, and Joseph Stiglizt’s…

In the short essay “Inequality has been Going on Forever,“ Leonhardt discusses the negative impact of the separation of the middle and rich class and how it affects the economy. He indicates the amount of massive inequality. Leonhard is able to enlighten the audience by describing the increasing wealth gap, by including our tax system, our education system and how the United States markets and deals with capital. Although many may argue that inequality will always be a problem, Leonhardt is able to shut down the idea by bringing in education as a solution to help the middle class rise up and form a more equal nation.…
