Compare and Contrast Essay
Roald Dahl and Edgar Allan Poe are two famous authors who write amazing stories, but how do they relate and differ from each other, that make you want to read more of their books? If you’ve read some of their books you might have been able to tell how they compare and contrast by their writing styles and the characters they create. For example, if you read Edgar Allan Poe’s books, you can see how he writes gothic, mysterious books, that usually end up with death, or recurring problems. As for Roald Dahl, he switches things up and has different styles of writing when he writes for adults or children. Three main points that will be discussed are Roald Dahl, Edgar Allan Poe, and how they contrast from each other.

Poe was an American author, poet, editor and literary critic, considered part of the American Romantic Movement. Edgar Allan, Poe was influenced by his life and the times he lived in to write the stories that he did. In his time, he discovered he was living in an age where dark literature were “best sellers”. The death of his parents when Poe was just three years old had also shaped his writing style which is gothic. John Allan, who was his adopted father, failed to pay for Poe to go to University of Virginia, because of his gambling debts. Although not all of his stories were dark and sad, some were filled with humor and hoaxes that lightened the mood. For comic effect, he used irony and exaggeration. Some of his best selling books were The Tell-Tale Heart, The Raven, The Cask of Amontillado, Berenice, and The Fall of the House of Usher. He is also more famous as a short story writer.
