Yahweh vs. The World on the Turtle’s Back
“The World on the Turtle’s Back” and “Yahweh” share many similarities and differences. They both talk about two culture’s beliefs about how the Earth was created, and how the plants and animals came to be. “The World on the Turtle’s Back” comes from the Native American tribes while “Yahweh” is a Hebrew tale. Both are interesting tales and help us understand these two vastly different cultures. In “The World on a Turtle’s Back” there is a pregnant woman who lives in the Sky-World with her husband. She sends her husband to gather all sorts of foods she is craving. One day she sends her husband to grab bark from the Great Tree. He cursed the man to grow plants in fields and eat bread till he dies. “The World on the Turtles Back” and “Yahweh” is similar because they both speak of a tree that people are not allowed to touch or eat from. In both stories a woman messes up and eats from the tree, which leads to the events that mess up their lives. In these stories beings were made from clay and dust. They both also say that the animals and plants were formed by the gods in each story. These two stories are different because in the Turtle’s back story, the dirt of the Earth came from a woman walking in a circle causing the dirt to grow. In “Yahweh” the Earth was already there. In “The World on the Turtle’s Back” the animals were created by two brothers competing with each other while Yahweh created them as helpers for man. In the turtle's back story the tree was in the sky world whereas in Yahweh, he placed it in a garden on Earth. In conclusion, the two vastly different cultures had somewhat similar stories about their beliefs in the establishment of the world. Both stories are very interesting and say a lot about these cultures. These stories would’ve meant a lot
