He would also teach me to be a tough, yet kind, person. There were times where he would teach me to develop a proper fighting stance in case I needed to defend myself during a fight (that has yet to come). He also taught me the importance of giving to others who are not as fortunate. For example, he once explained to me that he would often go to a bank in Minneapolis to convert U.S. dollars to Somali currency and then transfer them to his family overseas. And he always told me to have a sense of humor. Sometimes, it’s necessary to step out of anything stressful and just have some fun and games. I took that lesson to heart, and my friends now recognize me as the humorous person who doesn’t look like he has an ounce of stress on his body. I knew years before that it was going to happen if I kept up with my school work, but the moment felt very special to me. I will never forget getting my diploma, turning my tassel the other side, and throwing my cap up in the air. High school allowed me to develop into a more dynamic person; it had a wide variety of activities outside of class which I would partake in including Key Club, Track and Field, Student Council, and Speech and Debate. It was during this period where I strengthened my self-confidence and became a more open person. I became a better leader.
