RESULTS: An experiment was conducted to document the patterns of evolution in the fictional species, Cannus stannous. Fitness of the C. stannous population is determined solely by its ability to retain heat. Three genes determined heat retention; can size, skin type, and water level. Each gene had three alleles, producing 27 possible phenotypic combinations (Table 1).…
Environmental Effects on Pillbug Behavior Catherine Liapes October 14, 2015 AP Biology- Pd.9 Mr. Angus Introduction: Before conducting this lab, I researched information on pillbugs and learned that pill bugs are commonly found in damp environments such as piles of leaves, or under logs. Although they are crustaceous, they can still spend their entire lives on land. They are about ¾ inch in length with seven pairs of legs, and multiple antennae. Pillbugs are nocturnal and mainly consume rotting vegetation.…
There are many organisms in the world. In microbiology lab, I was given an unknown organism and I was told I must figure out what organism it truly is. I had the honor to conduct a few experiments to come to an conclusion on what the type and name of the organism was. Each member of my class was given a plate of agar and a random number that correspond to the plate of agar. I was given the number 191.…
In order to do the streaking method, an inoculating loop was sterilized with the Bunsen burner, and put into the unknown specimen then placed onto the TSA. After the plate was streaked it was then incubated at 37 degrees Celsius for 48 hours. The second step was observing the agar after incubation and identifying two different bacteria from the TSA. The third step after observation; was taking out the two bacteria with a sterilized loop and streaking it onto two Mueller Hinton plates. This allowed the separate colonies to grow further for testing.…
1. Write a narration of the figure describing the results of the experiment. Explain why the rabbits are emaciated in groups 1 and 2. (Please note: What Dr. Trudeau called Experiments 1, 2, and 3 are more like what modern scientists would call treatment groups 1, 2, and 3, and that terminology is used in Figure 1. • Based on Figure 1 survival graph, the rabbit in treatment group 1 which was artificially infected, and placed in a controlled environment is thin. Also, on the third month of the experiment, there is only one rabbit left out of the five rabbits in this group.…

Pill Bugs: An experiment Introduction Pill bugs are very small and can be found anywhere. Under rocks, in between cracks, in your science class; they are everywhere! However, it is common knowledge that pill bugs do not like to be in open spaces. There are just too many dangerous possibilities, and they don’t need to take the risks. In this experiment, we tested to see if light affected the decisions of where pill bugs like to stay.…
Purpose: Explore the spread of a communicable disease using a simulation. Question: What is the effect of immunity on the rate at which a disease spreads? Hypothesis: If a higher percentage of people are immune to a disease, then the disease will spread more slowly, because fewer people will be able to contract it or pass it on.…
Next reflame the loop, then return to the TSA turning it at 90 degree angle while streaking quadrant two dragging some of the substance from quadrant one. Follow the same steps until all three quadrants are completed, but avoid entering quadrant one only take from quadrant two. The purpose of the streak plate method is to produce isolated colonies of an organism. The TSA plate was incubated for approximately 48 hours at 37 degrees simply to grow bacteria. After returning back to the laboratory and noticing growth on the TSA plate the same streak plate method was applied to the MacConkey agar and the Mannitol salt agar.…
Introduction: The purpose of the tests (culture media, motility, enzymes, etc.) we preform on the numerous bacteria in lab is to show any biological or chemical characteristics of the bacteria that may help it survive or adapt in the wild, how it may be useful or hazardous to humans, and use as general knowledge to differentiate bacteria from each other. In the Culture Media test we can use solid and liquid media to grow multiple bacteria in lab. It can help us determine what processes the bacteria can carry out, what nutrients may be needed or not needed for bacterial growth, as well as other characteristics. In the Enzymes test we use different media to test what enzymes are present in a bacterial species and the metabolic processes they carry out to help us determine some differences that help identify or give us more information on certain species.…
Data Analysis The scientific question for this experiment is:” Does the amount of baking soda added to vinegar affect the amount of CO2 produced?” “If more baking soda is added to 50mL of vinegar, then more CO2 gas will be produced,” was the hypothesis. The independent variable was the different amounts of baking soda. Therefore, the dependent variable was the amount of CO2 produced.…
Agar dilution follows the principle of establishing the lowest concentration of the consecutively diluted antibiotic concentration at which bacterial growth is still inhibited. Advantage: group of minimal inhibitory concentrations, the result reproducibility, convenience of having pre- prepared panels, economy of reagents, test requires less space, and also provides assistance in generation computerized reports if an automated panel is…
