In Alabama in 1931 nine African American boys were accused of raping two white women Ruby Bates and Victoria price. These women were young raised in a world of poverty, ridiculed for who they were. These girls were tired of being victims to a society whom were nothing but cruel to them so they decided to accuse someone else in order to put someone lower.
Ruby Bates was a poor young millwork in Huntsville her mother was a prostitute and her father was a drunk with no job. Ruby’s family lived in a small shack in the black community of Huntsville. In To Kill a Mockingbird Mayella accuses Tom Robins of attacking and raping her for three reasons. Tom rejected her when she tried to kiss him, Mayella want attention no matter what kind of attention it was, and also because she was terrified of her father. In some ways, this was societies fault because they forced her to be alone and crave the attention and if she were to tell the truth about her trying to kiss a black man she would be ridiculed even more than she was previously. Victoria Price is very similar she accused the nine black boys in order to show that she was better than them and she wanted the attention and in a way to tell people that she didn’t do anything wrong that she was a good person and didn’t deserve the hate people give her. Both Mayella and Victoria would do anything to get attention and make themselves look better. This is very similar from nonfiction to fiction society treats both Mayella and Victoria very similar. However, even though Mayella and Victoria are accusers to some extent so is Ruby. Ruby does accuse the boys for her own personal gain. She wants the attention because society shuns her and she is also scared of Victoria. However, throughout the trial she sees what she is doing is wrong and tries to redeem it. Unlike Victoria she tells the truth about the boys not raping her or Victoria but society won’t believe her. Society believes that since the boys are black they must have done it and Ruby is just lying because someone paid
