In the opening of ‘Lord of the Flies’, Ralph and Jack are portrayed in different ways. It’s not only their psychological behaviour, it’s their physical appearances as well. Ralph is initially portrayed as something good while Jack is portrayed as someone to be feared. All of the different things help create an initial opinions of the boys. It also foreshadows who will the most savage and who will not be. Golding representations of Ralph and Jack shows us quite a stereotypical but understandable view of these two characters.

He is nicer than Jack. “Ralph smiled and patted the log.” Ralph is sweet and friendly to other people around him. He respects them and tries to make friends with all of them. It is what makes Ralph a good chief as well. He has the ability to listen. It plays along with the whole idea of Ralph being the good and most civil one. The one who doesn’t become something darker. It foreshadows this through his relationship with others. “Ralph explains kindly” when one of the boys is worried about the beast. Ralph assures him but he does it ‘kindly’. And that extra adverb shows his nice manners and sensitivity towards others. He does laugh at Piggy and betrays by telling everyone else, that Piggy’s name was Piggy. But he does feel a bit bad for him. But then Ralph defends Piggy, “He’s not fatty.” Golding portrays Ralph’s behaviour as confident but mild confidence. He is shown as a kind of hero. Defending those who need to be defended, sympathising for those who believe in the beast. People admire him for that. Jack is not like that. He is very rude and doesn’t work well with those who think they know things more than he does. “You’re talking too much.” “Shut up fatty”. Jack mocks those who are weaker than he is.
