ABSTRACT
In this paper, the student-writer will discuss the methods that are taught in The Biblical Counseling Movement by Powlinson (2010). The student-writer will compare and contrast the skills that are mentioned in this book to establish a well maintained way in which to minister to clients, and meet their needs as a counselor. The Nouthetic counseling approach will be discussed and evaluated, as a form of biblical counseling.

The Bible is the instruction book for the counselor to effective conduct change for the client. It stresses using the Word of God as the instrument to start the counseling process with conjunction with the conviction of the Holy Spirit on the person’s life. This will produce a desire to change and repent from their sin, which is the root of their pain and suffering. This will then produce the change that is necessary for forgiveness, healing, and strength found in the image of Christ. 98). The idea that God in his providence knows the issues, and knows the counselor and client inside and out. God speaks through his Word in the Bible and it is errant, and is the final authority for all mankind, necessary for salvation, healing, and direction in life. God uses consequences and rewards in this life to bless or curse us for our sins (Powlison, 2010, pp. 98-99).
Human Personality Adam’s theory focuses on the human condition in its fallen state, and the focus of the counseling is to assist the client in learning and recognizing their fallen condition, and their need for repentance and forgiveness. The counselor is encouraged to see the client in the view of God’s mercy and love through the eyes of Christ to minister to them so that they can effectively encourage change in the person’s life to grow closer to God. Adams rejects the views of the psychological field in our society that judges a person’s behavior based off the human’s functioning in society.
