The poem Beowulf is the telling of a great, brave, and fearless leader. Some would even say he is arrogant and thinks too highly of himself. Even though the book is different from the movie, Beowulf does live up to his name. You will see other people in this essay who may not like Beowulf for his titles; however, other people will forever live in his glory days. You will see many differences between the book and the movie. Beowulf was interesting and I enjoyed both the movie and the book, yet in the book Beowulf went home to be king, his warriors fled him, and the dragon was angry about the thief; even though, in the movie, Beowulf was king of Herot, his warriors helped him during battle, and he was the dragon’s father. Beowulf became king according to the book upon his arrival to his homeland; however, in the movie he became king of Herot. Beowulf became king of Herot because Hrothgar jumped from the castle and killed himself, yet in the book Hrothgar died. Beowulf also had no wife, mistresses, or any children during his reign as king in the book. Although in the movie, Beowulf had inherited the wife of Hrothgar, a mistress, and Beowulf even …show more content…
Beowulf and Grendel’s mother slept with each other and made a deal that as long the golden cup stayed in her cage that the kingdom of Herot will flourish in the movie. Yet in the book Grendel’s mother was also a vicious monster like her son. Beowulf’s wife knew that he had sexual relations with Grendel’s mother; therefore, she had no children with him in the movie. There is one major difference between the movie and the book when it comes to Beowulf having children, a wife, and mistresses. In the book there was no talk of a wife or children, let alone a mistress; however, in the movie he had a wife and a son. There was also no speak of sexual content in the book, which means he was too full of himself to even focus on a significant

After reading novels and other writings, readers tend to watch the film of that writing to spot the differences between the two. In this specific case, there were many differences between the poem and the film of Beowulf. One of the main questions that comes from watching and reading the story is “Is Beowulf still considered an epic hero despite his flaws given to him in the movie after being described as nearly flawless in the writing?” The questions of “What makes a hero a hero?” and “Is it better to have a hero who is flawed or a hero who is flawless?”…

All of his achievements were done just for the satisfaction of his ego and proves he is a narcissistic leader. These topics prove that Beowulf was a foolish and stubborn warrior/leader. Throughout this poem, Beowulf is constantly demonstrating these characteristics. He shows compassion for others by battling for the better of others. The first of these dissimilarities is the portrayal of one character as a hero and the other as a villain. In Grendel, the author creates a feeling that Grendel is somewhat of a hero, while Beowulf is an evil force trying to defeat Grendel. However, these roles are reversed in Beowulf; Beowulf is portrayed as a courageous warrior who is trying to drive out an evil villain and save Herot. Another difference between the two books is the description of Grendel. In the book Grendel, he is given many human qualities.…

The feared and hated beast from Beowulf is evidently different from the monster the reader learns and empathizes with in Grendel. Hrothgar, the King of the Danes, is yet another character that is described differently in the two books. In Beowulf, Hrothgar is depicted as a model king who, despite his old age, is still fairly strong. He is a generous and successful leader of the village people who seems to be nearly perfect. Grendel portrays the King in a different light, though.…

By defeating Grendel, Hrothgar rewarded him with various strikingly beautiful war gear not only for him but for his entire battle clan. After Beowulf murdered Grendel’s mother, he is rewarded with many horses and a large amount treasure and gold. Even though Beowulf dies from a venomous dragon bite, treasures that he and Wulfgar acquired after killing the dragon are hung up at his burning burial. The people’s need for a heroine portrays another significant similarity. Because Grendel was unable to feel joy, he grew extremely jealous of the people in the mead-hall who laughed and ate all night.…

Extra Characters Added to the Later Work On average, 3 out of 5 of my friends will always claim that the book is more superior than the movie. Supposedly the book presents additional details about the characters and gives you the opportunity to connect the dots and gain perception. However, in this case, the movie Beowulf and Grendel (Gunnarsson, 2005.) added characters such as the witch, Grendel’s son, and the praised man, to emphasize that the world views from today greatly differ in regard to the complications of understanding the concept of good and evil.…

Of the many heroes in the Anglo-Saxon and medieval literature, Beowulf is a prime example of a hero. In the Beowulf poem written by the Beowulf poet, and in Robert Zemeckis’ film, Beowulf. Beowulf selflessly sacrifices his own life in the hopes of saving the lives of the Danes, who belonged to a whole different clan than his own. Beowulf is willing to give his own life for the betterment of another society, and with this he chivalrously saves many people. Even though Beowulf is portrayed as an ideal hero in the poem, and in the movie the audience is introduced to his flaws, they are both similar in their theme of heroism.…

In two books “Grendel” and “Beowulf” the authors created two different point of views from the characters of Grendel and Beowulf. The book “Grendel” did a better job then “Beowulf”on how the reader gets an emotional adventure, how Grendel thinks that Beowulf isn’t the hero he is, and how the author get’s the reader feel “connected” to Grendel until the end of the book. In the book “Beowulf” itself, the people think of Beowulf as a hero to all. The book “Grendel” makes Beowulf seem like a selfish man, but in the book “Beowulf” he seems like more of a hero type, he is praised and treated like a king after killing Grendel.…

Beowulf is considered a heroic figure in the poem, because he protected the Danes from the beasts and in the movie he is shown more as a liar than a hero. Another difference in the book Grendel slays the Danes in the night, while they are sleeping, so that none have the chance to challenge him. But in the movie it shows Grendel bursts into Heorot in the night, but the Danes are awake, and fully witness his killing. In the book, after Grendel's death, his mother goes to Heorot to avenge him, but being weaker than her son, only makes off with a single thane. But in the movie, Beowulf is asleep in Heorot after slaying Grendel when he has a nightmare about Grendel's mother, awaking from it to see that she has silently murdered many of the men Heorot.…
