The book, Lord of the Flies, was published in 1954, and the movie, The Maze Runner, was produced in 2014. Although these two works were developed sixty years apart, they have much more in common than just being dystopian fiction. The Maze Runner, is the movie I chose for this compare and contrast essay. Throughout this essay, I will be talking about the various similarities and differences this book and movie have. The Maze Runner, was originally a book published in 2009 by author James Dashner and turned into a movie in 2014. The story is about a society of boys trapped in this maze, with no apparent escape. Both of the stories have a major plot devices, however one is internal and one is external to the characters. The plot device in Lord of the Flies, is a beast. The beast is constantly reappearing in many of the chapters, as the beast comes in many different forms for each boy. Then the plot device in The Maze Runner, is the maze and challenges within it. The maze is the common factor throughout the story, it is constantly throwing new routes and twists at the boys, while also providing dangerous creatures who roam about. The similarities of these devices is that each of these terrify the characters and impact the stories drastically. The differences of these devices are that, the beast is something completely made up, while the maze is something the characters have to face every single day if they want out. In Lord of the Flies, the main themes that I noticed are; betrayal, bravery, survival, and fear. During the book, Ralph gets betrayed many times by Jack, someone who he believed was going to be his friend, the ending of the book is really when it comes to light. Also the next three themes exist throughout the entire book and are noticeable in every characters.The themes I noticed in The Maze Runner were; friendship, order, and fear. The theme of friendship is probably the main theme that I saw, all of the boys have to be friends in order to survive and to get back to civilization. Then order is the next most relevant theme, the boys do the same thing every day, and if not everyday then they do the same things all throughout their time in the maze. The order is what keeps everyone in line, so that way the whole society will run smoothly. Fear is a theme which was prevalent in both stories. The fear of what might be out there is how the boys bond and what keeps their societies running. This is the main theme that the two stories share.
