The Mars Inc. started in 1911 when Frank C. In 1920 Forrest E. Mars joined his father in the business. During the Spanish Civil War, Forrest Mars saw soldiers eating small chocolate with hard sugar coating, the sugar coating was to prevent the candy from melting. The M&M’s candy was thought of during the Spanish Civil war and were designed to not melt in high temperatures. In the late 1940s, M&M’s regular chocolate candy became available to the public. At first they were sold in cardboard tubes but, in 1948 the brown bags was introduced and it still remains today. When M&M’s were first introduced, they didn’t have the “M” on the candy, it wasn't until 1950 that M&M were printed with the “M” on them. In 1976 they discontinued the red M&M due to a health concern but it was controversial so they added it back in 1987.

As M&M continue to grow they have added more flavors including peanut butter, almonds, dark chocolate, dark mint, dark chocolate peanut, crispy and pretzel M&M’s as well as the M&M’s chocolate bar and added different sizes including regular, mega and mini. In the 1980’s they introduced seasonal and special holiday line of M&M’s, for example red and green for Christmas. Currently, on the M&M’s website you are able to create and custom design your own personalized M&M’s. You are allowed to upload your pictures, use clip art and write a short message on the M&M, also it includes different packages that you can purchase.
