Kotter's Leadership Style

(Quote on leadership).What is leadership? According to John Kotter, Leadership is coping with change. In this essay, three different leadership styles will be discussed. These leadership styles will be restricted to charismatic, transactional and transformational leadership. In addition, the leadership style of South Africa’s former political leader and state President F.W De Klerk will be compared and contrasted to these leadership styles.
F.W De Klerk was first elected into parliament in 1978 and after eleven years in the cabinet he was voted head of state in 1989, a position which he held until 1994 when Nelson Mandela became his successor.

Transactional leadership is the first of the two, it is more of a guide or corrective measure where followers’ role and tasks are clearly defined and directed at achieving a certain goal. It employs disciplinary actions and incentives to motivate followers to perform. The main priority here is to oversee the smooth day-to-day functioning of an organization.
Transactional leadership is characterised by: a possible reward in return for a good performance or achievement like certificates, trophies or even bonuses etcetera. Management by exception which can either be active or passive. Active management means monitoring for deviations from set rules and standards and taking corrective measures while passive management means intervention only when standards have not been met at the end. And it is finally characterised by laissez-faire which means delegating responsibilities to others and to renounce decision

Transformational leaders basically help their followers to develop individually and equip them with the ability to look at old problems in a new way, thus, promoting intelligence and rationality. Inspirational motivation is also used to communicate expectations to followers and, at times, followers are treated as individuals and given attention or advice if necessary. Although transformational leadership can have fundamental and profound effects on the followers it cannot exist solely, it builds up on transactional leadership and concerns the future of the organization more than it does the day-to-day running of it. The best leaders are both transactional and transformational. Transformational leaders lead from the fore-front in being creative, innovative and risk-taking.
