Though women were given considerably more legal and civil rights than in other societies, they did not have the same freedoms as men. The primary job expected of women was to take care of their children and perform household tasks. While women could also hold jobs outside of the household unlike most ancient civilizations.

Hammurabi was an intelligent and strong ruler, and is most well-known for creation of Hammurabi’s law code. Hammurabi’s law code is famous for being the first use of standardized laws and has many characteristics that are similar to, or the same as modern laws. Though his law code has many features that are still in use today, it also has some aspects that differ. Hammurabi’s code laid the foundation for law and order throughout history and has some ideas that are still in use to this day, but was created about 4000 years ago in a completely different society and culture. Due to cultural and societal change the code has some archaic laws that would not be effective today. One difference between Hammurabi’s code and that of today is that the Babylonian code uses corporal punishment such as an eye for an eye.
