It has always been a great debate if wealthy people are a social problem or not. People have jump on and off the idea for years. Even though it clearly shows that there is a problem with money and social class, wealthy people are generally blamed.

There are three explanations of poverty, which are the individual, the structural, and the cultural explanations. “Many theories are offered to explain the nature of poverty and account for why so many people are impoverished in the United States” (Kornblum; Pg. 173). Several individuals want to know why poverty exist, and how they can end it. So, these three explanations help break down why, and offer some knowledge on how to prevent poverty. The individual explanation is the idea that those who are poor only have themselves to blame. For instance, it is believed by whites, and other non-poverty individuals that people create their own fate by their own will power. Individual explanation is largely target to those living on welfare. The structural explanation is the social inequality for race, power, and gender. The structural explanation shows how certain individuals don’t have the same opportunities within the social structure. For example, a single woman making minimum wage can’t afford to care for herself and her child, so she ends up living in poverty. Another example would be if an individual can’t find a stable job, so he has to move place to place looking for work, which makes him have no security of anything. In other words, if one spouse gets hurt in a car wreck and cannot work, then the drastic loss of income will put the family below the poverty line. The family will not have the basic needs to survive like money, which buys them food, shelter, and other essential needed. One example of event poverty is severe recession. Severe recession occurs when the economy has a periodic decline, which can last anywhere from 18 months to 57 months.
