The Hindu Creation Story

The Hindu creation story is much different than the Christian creation story. Both of these stories explain the same event, but in much different ways. While the stories are much different than each other, both speak of a single creator. This single creator for Christians is God. The creator for Hindus is Brahma. However, this is where the similarities between the Hindu creation story and the Christian creation story end.
The Hindus believe that the universe is created and destroyed many times and that it goes through day and night cycles. During one time the universe is not formed and all the energy is gone, then the energy returns and the universe once again takes form.

Vishnu awoke and from Vishnu's navel grew a lotus flower. In the middle flower sat Brahma. He awaited the Lord's command. The earth was bare, so Brahma created grass, flowers, trees and plants and gave feeling to them. Next he created the animals and the insects for the land, birds for the sky, and fish for the sea. He gave all of them senses of touch and smell and gave them power to see, hear and move. The world was full with life and the air was filled with Brahma's creation.
Then, a demon appeared and stole the world. He threw it far out into the cosmic ocean. Vishnu killed it and changed into an animal and rescued the world. Brahma finished forming the land and the living things. But one day, this Universe, like all others before it, will be wiped out when Lord Shiva, the destroyer, grows angry with the world’s evil. He will destroy the world and nothing will exist but

I then read the Iroquois' creation myth titled "The Creation." There creation is based on animals and that earth was just an island in the sky separated by clouds. This myth seems to focus creation on the inhabitants of earth rather than earth itself. I can appreciate this because the spiritual creation of animals seems more probable to me then the spiritual creation of earth. " One day the Great Ruler said to his people: "We will make a new place where another people may grow,"" (Iroquois, pg. 36).…
