THE AUTHOR: GUY DE MAUPASSANT
Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant (5 August, 1850 – 6 July, 1893) is a French writer who has written many poems, novels and short stories in his lifetime. But he is most well-known for his short stories, in fact considered as one of the fathers of modern short stories. He served as role model for O. Henry and Somerset in respect to his clever plotting of story. His stories paint a fascinating picture of French Society of 19th century. He generally wrote about greed, love, sex, misunderstanding and lying. His stories feel modern in writing style and subject matter. Some of his notable works include The Necklace, The Horla, A Piece of String, Miss Harriet, The Wreck, Bel Amie, The Life, At Sea etc.

Henry respectively are known as one of the best short story writer of their time. They are well known for the “twist endings”. In both the stories, writers deal with a poor young couple who face certain trials, and had an unusual irony although different. There are certain socioeconomic similarities but difference in attitude towards life of the main characters. The setting is also almost same i.e. a small apartment apart that it is placed in different country. Both occur in winter time during fall- one in January and other during Christmas around the turn of the century.
Wealth is one of the most important aspect about which both the stories deal with. They both are poor family and have least amount of materialistic possession. Their financial state is shown by the detailing of their apartment by their authors. But this financial shortage has different effects on the protagonists of the stories. Della loved his husband unconditionally and sacrificed her most precious possession for him where as Madame Loisel is always unhappy and dissatisfied with her present living and feels that she deserves a much better
