The French and Indian War
The French and Indian War, also known as the Seven Years War, was fought between the years of 1756 and 1763 in and around the Ohio Valley. Although referred to as a war between the French and the Indians, it was in fact between the French and the English. Although, there were Native American tribes on both sides as well as some who attempted to remain non-combative.
Many tribes sided with the French during this time. When the French first came to North America, they were seeking trade opportunities.1 In the beginning they were unsuccessful in creating colonies due to blunders on their part. Their goal in coming to North America was to seek and secure land for themselves. The policies that they implemented tended to be homicidal towards the Indigenous People that they encountered.1 When they first arrived to start colonies, they did not stray far from the coast. It was not until the 18th century that their lust for conquering more land for their use that they started to move further into the mainland. The English were the instigators of the war and the first to declare it upon the French.1 In order to procure the trust of the tribes not already in alliance with the French, the English claimed they were there to ensure that the French did not seize tribal lands. The British were triumphant; yet when the 1763 Treaty of Paris was negotiated, it was done without the attendance of leaders from the Indigenous People involved. The treaty stated that all native tribes located east of the Mississippi River would be under the control of the English. Jeffery Amherst was placed in charge of English relations with the Indigenous people. His ideology was that the native people were savages and must be punished in order for them to adhere to English rule. This ideology was widely practiced and those that fought with the English in the war were treated no different than those that opposed the British.
