The Ottoman Empire was an ancient empire that had existed since warrior tribes from Asia conquered the lands of the Byzantine Empire. The tribes were descendants of their first leader Osman. The Ottoman Empire governed territory from the Hungarian plains in Europe to the borders of Persia, then from the northern black shores of the Black Sea, the Caucasus Mountains to the Atlantic shores of Morocco. This was a very large territory to the Ottoman Empire and their language, religion and culture varied as well. The empires took up the Muslim religion, and this became the state religion. The Ottoman’s rulers’ title was “sultan.” The Ottoman armies and navies had the best fighting forces, and their strength was through all the lands in the sixteenth century. However by the nineteenth century, they had lost multiple battles and their economy was suffering. The Western civilization was producing products cheaper than they Ottoman could, and they were now in a crisis
